Changing exhaust

If I were to change the exhaust on my 2010 Mini Cooper S, removing the second catalytic converter would I get a check engine light? Could that be coded out with a tune if there is a check engine light?

Thank you.

You will not have any issues removing the second cat.

Correct removing the second cat doesn't create CELs as the second cat isn't monitored.

The second cat is not monitored by any sensors, so the vehicle would not even know it was removed. If you removed the 1st cat with a catless downpipe, then you would get a light. And yes that light can be coded out.

Oh alright thank you all!

I was think about going to a muffler shop and having them cut out the exhaust from the second cat. Then installing a 2.5" strait pipe into maybe a magnaflow 2.5" with dual 2.25" outlets and get a couple decent looking tips installed.

I might even do it myself if I can rent the exhaust flaring tool at an auto parts store.

Anyone else do something like this?
I figure I could do something like this for around $200 vs $600+...

my suggestion is you remove the resonator and 2nd cat and just go off and remove everything and replace the pipe with a 2.5" or 3" pipe. im going to do a cut out right before the muffler.

Yeah that is similar to what I was thinking. You can get a 2.5"X5' stainless steel 18g tube for around $70+shipping. Muffler, tips and exhaust clamps around $150-$200. Tailpipe expander tool is $20 (to stretch factory pipe right after down pipe).

i would recommend going to a meineke or something. to be honest you can get a muffler there cheap and they will weld it all for you for around 200. the one by me charges me 100 bucks to install a muffler and they reused the stock tips. i mean yea i regret it now because i didnt think it through . i should have just dont the 3 inch pipe and cutout lol.

I'll look into that. I just don't want my mini to sound like a swarm of bee's....
"Cutout"?? Is that where you bypass the muffler or something?

Sounds interesting. I think that might be too loud for me, I basically have a strait pipe on my Subaru and that thing is pretty damn loud.
I have to have a muffler, I just don't want it to sound like a civic or some other POS.
I do mostly highway driving too, so I don't want to deal with any annoying drone either.

If you are doing this yourself, come up with a plan on how to do the hangers. The exhaust is supported in the front by two rubber ovals (a rod is welded on the pipe) and the rear by another pair of oval rubber pieces.
It may just mean that you cut behind the front hanger rather than behind the downpipe.
Drone is a tough one to predict. Some cars have it bad (mine was), others not so much. Plus, some people are more sensitive to the sound than others. My only point is that you may want to take a few steps to get where you want. Maybe just pull the 2nd cat first, then see how you like it?

Have fun,
Mike
