2nd Gear Grinding

Hi y'all,

I've got a 2007 Mini Cooper S with 43,000 miles on it. Recently I've started to get a little bit of a grinding noise whenever I let the clutch out after shifting from 1st to 2nd. Is this the synchro?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Only if its not all the way in gear.

If your synchro is shot (or your clutch about gone), you'll get grinding trying to put in second with the clutch pedal fully depressed.

Gotcha, any idea why it would be grinding as I release the clutch pedal then? It's definitely all the way in gear when I shift.

I have no idea, although weird things can happen with a way worn clutch.

The grinding is only while you are letting the pedal come up? Or is it also after the clutch is engaged and you're driving down the road?

Listen carefully in other gears than 2nd. If it happens in all gears, it is likely something to do with the clutch itself. If it really only is with one gear, the problem is more likely inside the transmission.

Thanks y'all,

I'm going to change out the transmission fluid and check on the clutch and go from there.

Could be clutch chatter. My chatters a little bit after a long drive. It's most noticeable when going into 2nd. Do you feel anything in the clutch pedal?
