according to tirerack.com, the conti ExtremeContact DW has no treadwear warranty, the michelin pss has a 30,000 mile treadwear warranty

tirerack test results:

Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position (Max Performance Summer)
Continental ExtremeContact DW (Max Performance Summer)
Michelin Pilot Super Sport (Max Performance Summer)
Pirelli P Zero (Max Performance Summer)

michelin was #1, bridgestone #2, conti #3 and pirelli #4

Since I get some camber wear wouldn't the tread warranty be useless anyways?

Actually, by the reviews, the PSS has better comfort and treadwear than the DW,
but it is more expensive. I got the DW tires last year because the PSS is not available in 205/50/16.
The S-04 is another great choice, but it is a bit heavier than the other two.
I don't think I'd consider the P Zero.
This link puts all the Max Perf 205/45/17 tire survey results on one chart:

I went with Yokohama Advan Meoca AD08 Rs and I'm loving them! Tons better than the stock run flats!

DOtheDEW,

I see your car is really tricked out, so if you want the best max performance summer tires the top two tires as review by consumers are the Michelin Pilot Super Sport rated at 9.12 of 10 and the Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position at 8.74 of 10.

I’m been through 3 sets of Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Positions on two R56S’s and the performance is awesome in the rain or shine all the way down to the wear bars. Everyone I know running the Michelin Pilot Super Sport raves about them but I have not tried them.

The size’s that fit the R56 are the stock 205 45 17, the up sized 215 45 17 and the extreme sized 225 45 17. I run the extreme sized 225 45 17 in the S-04’s, but everyone I know running Super Sports uses the 215 45 17.

I hope this helps...

Even the Yokohama S. Drives are better than stock run flats. Not a bad budget summer tire.

Since my last post, I actually had Pilot Super Sports (215/45/17's) installed and can say there is no rubbing. Don't know much about how they perform though since I'm letting them break in for now.
I say buy the PSS's, wear them out in 15-20K and claim warranty.

Can you post a picture of your wheel/wheel well with the 215/45/17s? I'm currently on NM springs (about to install a set of coilovers) and 205/45/17s and I still feel there could be less "gap", but kinda want to go lower with the coilovers...

Worried about rubbing and looking like having "balloon" tires with the 215/45/17s.

215's definitely have a 'beefier' look to them. I'm on stock suspension and the tires did fill in my wheel well a little more, but personally, I love the 'beefy' tire look.

Well, yes, but you can rotate the tires side to side unlike the "V"- treaded tires for more even wear.

Sorry but it's dark out. So pictures are a no go. But I took a bad pic in the garage. I have Ohlins and the weather has not been good enough to install them, as I'm not going to sit on the floor when it's in the 30's. I'm at about -2 degrees front and back for camber. That has the stock 17's looking alittle sucked into the fenders.

Thanks for the pictures, man. I don't know if I wanna run tires that tall or not... Your car looks really good and aggressive.

If anyone's curious about the performance of the Michilen PSS' I took mine up the canyons today and let it rip. They are spectacular tires. There's grip up the wazoo and while they have a comfortable ride the steering stays sharp. My previous tires were Hankook Ventus V12's which were solid performers but had soft sidewalls which made for numb steering and slow turn in. Their grip was good, but the PSS' don't even squeak on the turns that made the V12's chirp or howl. The greatest part was that despite the fact the PSS' were just installed with full tread, after 80 miles of hooning there was very little shredding or discernible wear.

And here's a picture of them (215/45/17) on my black Conical's for size reference.

conti dws = value but can & will hydroplane

michelin as3 = copy of dws, value & NO hydroplane

both all season but performs exceptionally well during the dryer months.. for less and both offer above 40K tread warranty.

i think i am off tangent here but oh well…. too late now.

I'm on my second season with DWs, and I love them as much as the day I got them. I've had the stock RE050a tires and some Ventus V12s so far for summers, and definitely prefer the DWs to either of the others I've had so far on this car.

If you have cash to burn I guess yes, you get better performance but the trade off is that you get less life out of them.

DSW's hydro do not hydroplane, I know that this are all season and doesn't apply to you but info is wrong, I have pushed my DSW harm on wet roads and for me this is were they shine, I have about 10k on mine 0 issues.

I want to get the DW's next

It depends if you have the money I guess, and if you plan on taking advantage of Michelin's warranty. I will say this though, I've heard people talk about the DW's soft sidewall and how if influences steering response (for the worse). At first I thought "well how bad could it be?". While I've never had the DW's, I just finished off some V12's which had soft sidewalls and damn, the sharper response of the Michelin's are awesome and very noticeable, even though they're at full tread (which usually dulls steering response).

When all is said and done, it just depends on your driving style. If you head up the the canyons every week like me then yes, the PSS' are worth the money. But if you just want a pretty grippy tire that lets you take freeway turns quickly then the DW's should be fine.

I'll chime in with an often overlooked tire. Toyo Proxes T1 Sport UHP summer tires. I run 235/40ZR17's on 7.5" wide rims with a 45mm offset. They stick like crazy glue, work great in the rain, are quiet and don't rub even if dropped. I haven't tracked the car yet so I can't comment on track performance. I can say I do seem to have some kind of curvy road fetish and suffer from a medical condition that makes my right foot about ten lbs heavier than the left. (Gotta remember to get that looked at.) Anyway got about 10k on them at the moment and they seem to be holding up well.

I've had excellent performance with Sumitomo HTRZ III for summer tires. Great in the wet as well, very inexpensive from Tire Rack.
