So I took the stripes off my r56 the other day planning on putting an offset stripe down. To my amazement the previous owner had some damage and got the car repainted but didn't take off the stripes so there are indentations around the stripes (clear coat). Thinking about doing a wetsand/buff to try and get them even with the rest of the coat. Took it to a car paint place and was quoted $700 to repaint...the easiest solution is to buy stripes and put em back but what are your thoughts?

 

Repainting would be you last option. Laying new stripes would work. Hopefully you are able to find stripes with the same dimensions otherwise there maybe a very small indentation where the old stripes were. Another option would be spray a few coats of clear to build up the section where the old stripes were. I think building up the clearcoat would be safer than sanding the old coats to level it.

 

That won't work, I'm sorry. It'll make things worse. You're only hope is to scuff and reshoot the clear on the whole hood.

 

At a minimum you are going to need to wet sand/block out the ridges, then your best option would be to scuff and re clear the hood.
It'll be a couple hundred $ in a body shop, and 80% of that is going to be labor. :(

 

no good. may just buy some bonnet stripes and hope for the best...
