Castrol edge titanium does not have a rating of a4 b4 or a3 b4. These are European standards meaning fully synthetic. The a3's are longer oil interval a4 higher performance. Castrol edge and mobile 1 synthetic have it. Sent from phone

To add to royal purple it doesn't even have European standards, I think only American which means it may not even be fully synthetic

According to Castrol anything 5w-30 and above specifically doesnt meet requirements of Acea. I attached both the documents. Im not entirely sure what A5 b5 is but I know a3/b3 a4/b4 was recommended for mini use.

So like i said before in the past i've used redline but due to the fact it is hard to locate where i am at i switched to edge titanium. so my question would be, what is the best synthetic oil that meets mini specs that is common to get at most parts stores?

i'm surprised a lot of you guys are running mobil1 0w40, even the "european" formula.. is it even 100% synthetic? (100% as in genuinely full synthetic, not the legal definition that allows you to put it on your bottles). also, most of you guys aren't really doing your car any favors running a 40wt at all - thicker weights offering more protection is a huge myth, and for 99% of you, all you're really doing is putting more wear on the motor.

for the base mini, i wouldn't run anything other than 0w30, amsoil sso 0w30 for me since i have a dealer account. for anything turbocharged, i would unquestionably be running amsoil zrod 10w30 - here's a good discussion on zinc additives in engine oil. note the oils classified as "outstanding protection" (tldr: amsoil zrod 10w30 is on it)

check bitog if you ever need real data on any kind of auto oil

I run Mobil 1 5W40 in my Mni. I use Amsoil 20W50 in my Porsche. I live in the South too, but the Porsche is air cooled and runs hotter and regular oil breaks down at 250 deg. F . If I run my Porsche hard in the summer my oil temp can reach 250. Stick with a good synthetic and 5W40 is good for your Mini.

Doesn't really answer the question, but even though I love working on my car, I will not change my own oil. The dealer 8 miles from me only charges $59 so for me the $25 in savings just isn't worth it.

i'd strongly recommend amsoil zrod 10w30 over any 40wt oil for the mini, especially if its turbocharged

I take mine to the dealer for $60 oil changes because of the 'diagnostic check' they do (keeps me alerted to what I need to be prepared for), because it keeps me 'in the loop' with the dealership's service team, and because it means I don't have to lug a big jug of spent oil to the recycling center.

Yeah the local shop said they did a inspection of the car and a oil change with liqui molly for around 55$ seemed like a good deal to me. I just wanted to make sure Liqui molly is a quality oil for my mini. i change the oil about every 5000 miles.

Mobil 1 0W40 for me. Every 5K miles. I just had my guy change mine with me supplying oil and filter. He charges me $10 for labor, including torqueing everything to spec and letting it drain for 30 minutes while we have a cup of coffee. IMO changing at 10K or more is foolish. I run Mobil 1 in my Vette and it gets changed every 3K. Cheap insurance as far as I'm concerned.

I suspect the reason people run the Mobil1 0W40 is because it is the weight that MINI recommends for that brand of oil.

More accurately, 0W40 the only weight of Mobil1 that has the appropriate certifications
and approvals(A3/B3, LL-01, etc.) that MINI requires.
