R56 A peculiar thing about JCW & MCS shift knobs (& weight)
A peculiar thing about JCW & MCS shift ***** (& weight)
As my MCS shift **** was a bit worn on one side (not sure what the previous owner was up to!), and as I have the redwood interior, I thought a stock JCW shift **** would be perfect (red lettering, red stitching). When it arrived in the mail, I put it on a postal scale and saw it was 6.4 ounces. Again... perfect, as this is the exact weight of the shorty 'weighted' zhp shift **** I had on my e46 (and that most guys want for their e46s).
The problem was... when I took off my stock MCS **** and weighed it, it was 8 ounces! I was hoping for an increase in weight, or at least to stay the same. SO I had some tungsten powder hanging around -- good for weighing stuff down. I removed the chrome cap, broke off the tabs, filled some of the holes in the body of the **** with powder, filled the sides of the cap, then filled the center of the cap with a 2-part epoxy and had the **** up close to 8 ounces pretty quickly (7.6).
It makes more sense to me now why people replace their stock JCW *****... but it also confuses me why the 'upgrade' **** is carbon fiber. Even if it is just for the look... what is with the desire to use a super light weight material on a shift ****, when light ***** increase notchiness? To each his own, I suppose.
