R56 keyfob died
The keyfob for my R56 will not open the doors but the car runs when you put it in start. This is the spare keyfob and has rarely been used since I bought this car. I believe it is rechargeable, it does not have replaceable battery in it. Do I need to buy a new one? Is there a way to recharge this one?

If you have the comfort access, then you'll need to buy a new battery. If you have the regular system (i.e. put the fob in the dash and push the start button), then you just need to use that key for a few days. It's re-charged through the ignition system and will be find after you use it a bit more often.
If you have "Comfort Access", use a dime or something thin to prop open the back of the key fob. You will see the little battery in there. Pay attention to what side of the battery you see before removing. Remove the battery. You will see a small 4 digit (I think) number on one side of the battery. Go to Staples, CVS or anywhere that sells those batteries and pick up a couple. They all look the same but the battery number is important so you get the same battery. Put the new battery in, make sure you replace it with the same side facing up. Snap the back cover of the key fob back into place and your good to go for another 3 or 4 years. I just replaced mine. Battery was like $5.00 each. I believe the dealership might charge significantly more.

So, with no battery, use the key on some long drives, and it MAY recharge...
If you have the comfort access feature (button on door handle to unlock with key close to car, and no key IN ignition required for start/run - I expect not the case for the OP), replace the battery.
When I received my car (no comfort access feature), the MA advised I use both keys regularly - the spare at least once or twice every 3 or so months to make sure it remained charged. All that said, if the rechargeable battery doesn't recover, you will have to replace an re-program the key I expect.
Good luck!
