I still wouldn't pay that kind of money for a rebuilt turbo and labor. Are you handy at all? If you can turn a wrench I think you might be able to handle doing the swap.

 

I've never done anything like this before, but I have changed the oil/brakes/tires etc.

It's actually for a new turbo, not a rebuilt one. I'm trying to find out what turbo it is so I can check if we could find it cheaper to fit it ourselves.

Quick update, I was wrong about GPop Shop's k03/k04 Hybrid turbos. I spoke with them and the direct replacement turbo for our cars would be $950. Still not bad, but it's cheaper to get it rebuilt (I was quoted under $750 with upgrades to internals).
