I don't have checkered but I have oem union jacks. They seem to have a very thick clear coat. The left side got a little hazy and chipped by road debris from oncoming traffic so I wet sanded it with some 600 and then 1200 grit sandpaper. That took off the chips and haze and then I polished it with some plastic polish (the kind used for headlight covers). It looks good as new now. I'd try removing the covers and wet sand in an inconspicuous on the bottom of one of the mirrors to see if the original color comes back. Alternatively, you could just try something like Meguiar's paint cleaner and lots of elbow grease. Good luck.

I've had the same problem twice. I've always had everything checkered; when my mirrors yellowed for the first time, I tried pretty much everything to fix it, ended up sanding down through the clear coat and ruining them. Bought another pair, they started yellowing too, so I dug up my write up from the dealership visit when I bought them and had them installed; it was within some period of time (I forget what it was, maybe 1 yr. from purchase) that the caps were under warranty, and they replaced them for free. I ended up getting rid of my checkered side scuttles from the same issue though...

The last set of caps I got seem to be doing much better, they've been on the car for a long time sitting in the sun and haven't started yellowing. Maybe the new ones don't have the issue the old ones did? Not sure though. Just my experience with this issue.

Good luck.

My checkered caps yellowed after 3 years. Tried several levels of polish... nothing worked. Replaced them with beautiful, bright white, new ones.

Sounds like a problem with the clear coat. The white portions on my union jack covers haven't yellowed (on the car about 1 yr) but I'll keep my eye on it.
