I have a MCS 2008 and I getting ready to do my first oil change, however I am having a hard time figuring out what type of oil filter I need, mainly because I am not sure what engine I have.

When I search web sites, like amazon and rockauto, the engine type listed seem to differ to some degree. I cannot fine a definitive source for cooper engine types.

For example, rock auto has 2 engine types listed :
1. 2008 MINI COOPER 1.6L L4 Turbocharged DOHC
2. 2008 MINI COOPER 1.6L L4 Supercharged SOHC

and on amazon they have these 2 listed:
1. 1.6L L4 Gas DOHC Distributorless Turbocharged Siemens MS Electronic FI MFI
2. 1.6L L4 Gas SOHC Distributorless Supercharged SFI Electronic FI MFI

So does the mini cooper S (2008) have a single or dual overhead cam? What what is the MANN filter part number I need for my car?

The turbo.

 

It depends on whether you have a convertible or a hardtop. A hardtop is a turbocharged car. A convertible is a supercharged car. They did not make the convertible in the new body style in 2008, so it had the old engine.

Just look under the hood, the turbo would be right at the front of the engine, it's hard to miss.

Because I do not know the difference between a turbo and a supercharger. Or whether I had a dual or single overhead cam.

 

If you own a 2008 'S'-model HARDTOP (R56 platform - 2nd Generation), you have the N14 1.6L DOHC (16v) turbocharged I4.
