Bridgestone's

I just got a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE970 AS Pole Positions. They are the best ultra high performance all-season non-runflat tires I have had on my MINIs. This includes my 03 MCS and my 09 JCW.

These tires have very good dry and wet traction (I have not had them in snow yet so I can't comment on that at this time). They have excellent cornering characteristics, with good on center feel. They do not wander on the highway and the road noise is very acceptable. A little harsh ride due to the stiff sidewalls, but still more pliant than run-flats.

I bought them in 215/45 R17 91W, which are larger than stock tires. This makes the steering response a little slower but still totally acceptable and the car retains that go-kart feel. There has been no adverse affect on gas mileage.

The only downside is that they are a little squeely under hard braking. The car still tracks straight, but the tires chirp and the traction control lights up more than before.

The tread pattern is aggressive and the sidewalls are very handsome. They come with rim protectors which is good for city driving. These are not tires for autoX or the track. Nor are they meant for heavy snow. But if you are a spirited driver and want a year round tire that can keep up, these are the ones. (Can you tell that I really like these tires?)

They are a bit pricey, but I got them on a promotion from the Bridgestone dearer, buy three get one free. Tire Rack is also offering discounts when you buy a full set of Bridgstones at this time.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll be glad to respond.
