I will add to the above which I totally agree with. I would change the oil in a used car immediately just to give it a good flush and put my own brand in. This is just something that I would do.

I wouldn't let them change the oil either. I had a rather bad experience with Jiffy Lube and a previous car. Never again. If you can't change the oil yourself, take it to a dealer, or local mechanic with a good reputation among local MINI owners. I found a good mechanic by asking in the NAM forum for my nearest MINI club.

Changing the oil requires very little in the way of mechanical expertise...
unfortunately, at a place like jiffy lube the job is delegated to people
with very, very little in the way of mechanical expertise, and very little
motivation to do things right. You can learn to do it yourself very well by
perusing these forums, or get a good honest mechanic to do it at his usual
hourly rate, and then you and your MINI will be a lot safer off...
or you can take your chances with the companies like Jiffy Lube.

You can definitely tell what shape it is in by estimating how long it has been in there by crosschecking the color. I have noticed that it goes through many different shades as time wears on. This may not be apparant to the average automobile owner, who might check their dipstick once a week or every two weeks, but when you continously check a dipstick day after day, sometimes 2 - 3 times a day, you will notice.

You are basing this on your experience with mowers..........I thought we drove MINI's?
