New Transmission - break in period necessary or not?

So my old man's 08 MC w/ 8700 miles is getting a new transmission installed tomorrow. The undiagnosed problem occured from accelerating from 0 mph. The car would hesitate (felt like running on a cylinder or two less) and then "lunge" forward.

Anyway is a new break-in period necessary for a new tranny? TIA

The manual says to follow proper break in whenever a new major component is installed. Such as an engine, clutch, or transmission.
