R56 Shift Knob Fix
Shift **** Fix
The manual shift **** on my 07 Cooper came off in my hand last night, and I was wondering how to put it back on. The leather boot covers the actual attachment point, so it wasn't immediately obvious as to how to put it back. Any suggestions? I noticed the exact same thing on a test drive of a dealer's Clubman, so it can't be that rare!
Thanks!

They just snap into place. Slip it back into position and give it a sharp rap with the palm of your hand to pop it back on.
Once it's been off, it'll come off again, but even easier. Try not to pull up when shifting, and you should be fine.

I did try to push down on the top of it, and I even gave it a bit of a thump with my fist. I'm a little afraid of hitting it any harder, but I have to admit, I'm not that strong. Would a rubber mallet work?
It shouldn't take a lot of force to get it snapped back on; a mallet really should not be required. The plastic snaps ride up a small "ramp" before they lock into a groove.
If you do use a mallet, don't get too carried away with it.
