I thought the driving lights only worked when the high-beams were on?

I ordered the rear (and front) fogs on my '06 MCS mainly because I have a 40 mile one-way commute on a divided highway. It rains a lot here and cars become invisible in the rain. I also switch on the rear fog if some Bozo behind me has his high beams on. It works about 10% of the time. I guess they just can't see that blazing blue light on their dash panel. In Europe you often see cars with a single rear fog on the driver's side and a reverse lamp on the opposite side. Simple, efficient, and logical, but terribly asymmetrical. Would never sell in America.

I got them because it fills the switch bank in nicely in addition to making the rear of the car look complete. They also help when parking to light up the curb/garage wall.

I LOVE flicking the switch when ppl are following me too close. Freaks the hell out of them. LOVE IT. I am doing them a favor anyway-- if I actually DID have to slam on my breaks for a child, or a large animal, or another car... they might rear end me. This way... they are warned to back off, and I am not actually breaking.

Sadly, the learning curve for understanding that I am not actually "breaking" seems quite short and flicking the switch usually leads to them passing me-- which is also a desireable outcome.

They're called FOG lights. Not "drive with them on all the time lights" People who drive with fog lights on in clear weather look stupid. You think you look cool? Nope, you look like you just trying to be cool with how many lights you can light up on you car. Trust me, nobody cares! Just my opinion.

Do you refuse to drive with your headlights on unless it's dark out? Also, I'm pretty sure everyone was just saying that they use them to increase visibility (read: so they don't get rear ended), not because they look good.

You might want to check with your local police.....running rear fogs w/o reason is against the law.

Well I opted for the Chili package and they were on it. I love them... They work really well with tale gaiters and it makes the car look great at night 2.

I agree....I would never use them to ward off tailgaters. That's just asking for trouble.

Another poster stated they run the rear fogs ALL the time at night, which is creating these responses. To which I agree 100%, running rear fogs at night in clear weather is just plain dumb, it's annoying to the people behind you, and it's probably against the law on top of everything else.

As for running front fogs on a clear night just for the visual effect, that's also not necessary, considering that there are two cosmetic lights above the fogs that turn on when you turn on just the headlights, so you get the same "effect" regardless. Ultimately though, I've found that the standard headlights in the R56 are underpowered, and the front fogs actually help fill out the lights and visibility up front, even on clear nights. I only turn them on in rural areas, though.

Well I have a question for everyone. Why is it that the very first thing driver instructors tell there students to have the full lighting system on... If it's "against the law" then why do they teach it?

Thanks for the thread. I just ordered the 35 dollar kit from gominigo. Mine lights are just reflectors now. I just want to use them as regular tail/brake lights.

We don't have fog or anything like that around here but for some reason when I drive the mini, drivers behind me like to climb up my behind.

The ironic part is when I drive the H2, when I put my turnsignal on to pull into my shop, they immediately slow down or change lanes. When I'm driving the mini, I must be invisible.

Mark

Conversely, I would say that tailgating someone is asking for trouble.

You can get a ticket for that. It's been posted on this forum, just so you know. If they teach you in driving school to have the fog lights on all the time then they have some catching up to do there. They call them "fog lights" for a reason lol.

Well if someone was blinding me with their rear fogs I would just make sure I ride behind them with my high beams on that'll make them think twice, lol
