R56 The 21 Under club
I'm 20, a junior at UConn, majoring in mechanical engineering.
This past summer, I worked 80 hr weeks @ a bar, saved every $ in tips, plus pay, and saved enough to drop on a 25% downpayment. The rest is through a loan, which is being paid off month to month.
I drive spiritedly, but I am among the mature group of my age imo, as is in many people who know me [especially older folk]. Before purchasing my mcs, I drove hand me downs from my parents, a '94 and a '97 [where i learned the basics to wrenching]- so being able to afford a brand new car and work on it as I see fit, is among one of the biggest accomplishments since I turned 18 (besides getting into college). My past summer was *****, but I now have this beautiful piece of machine to show for it.
What is considered driving responsibly depends on each person- to LEO, driving responsibly is going the speed limit, which I can say whether you're 16 or you're 50, 3 out of 4 people do not drive the speed limit- (which you can prove yourself by taking a sample while driving the speed limit and watching just how many people pass you [on a highway or multilane road]) ...does that mean 75% of drivers are driving 'irresponsibly' meaning they cannot own their own car? I disagree obviously. I agree street racing is obviously not considered responsible- but just because you're under 21 does not automatically imply you are irresponsible- I make smart judgements while driving and am very observant- and hold to date a clean record. [im not specially responding to only your msg lumpofcoal, but to this thread in general]

I'm 20 and own a 2009 MC.
The Government takes care of its employees... you just gotta know which one to apply for! Good thing police departments don't accept any under 21s... I don't think I'd be making the money I do now to afford my MINI! It was a blessing in disguise, I suppose.
I do believe you can drive a little bit over the limit and still be a responsible driver. A lot of people get angry when someone says, "I drove 80 today." However, it is the ones who drive 80-130 on a public highway trying to beat each other to the destination. The types who squeeze into spaces between cars that is barely enough room for them, or the ones who disregard stoplights/signs to "win". That is true silliness.
It is stupid to race like that in the streets. It takes zero skill, because of the countless variables that stop you from "winning." Take it to a real racetrack... we'll see who wins there!!
No tickets yet for me. Most of the cops in my area are campers so I generally know where they are sitting and running radar. The most I will ever push is 5 over and thats only when I am in a hurry to make it somewhere. I have also had too many friends get in serious poo with the law for street racing. A $50 dollar day pass at a local racetrack sounds better than a multi K ticket for racing a shmoe between lights.
i am 30 years old and i took my mom out for a 30 min drive. We were cruzing at 80 on an empty stretch of road and my V1 went off and i slowed down to the speed limit of 60. We maintained this speed for at least 3 miles and then my mom looked over at me and asked me why we were driving so slow? (she drives 5 under everywhere)In the mini fast feels slow. The real problem is the driving instruction in the USA not immature drivers. Everyone wants to pigeon hole every young drivers a the "problem" i have seen some 50year olds driving some Merch in the passing lane going something like 55mph. That is just as bad as some "teen" street racing. We just need a better system to treat driving as a privilege not a right. Some people don't deserve to drive at ANY AGE.
