I have tried pulling the lever underneath the seat and pulling the latch behind the seat, but no luck. It sounds like it could be a broken cable according to some of the other threads I have read. Has anyone else experienced this issue? My MINI is just over two months old.

 

It turns out that there was a problem with the track under the seat. The dealership is going to fix the issue under warranty.
