The weirdest problem

My 2 week old MCS 6 speed is exhibiting the weirdest problem in my 30 yr driving experience: Sometimes (it happened 3 times), when starting uphill, in first gear, it moves BACKWARDS, it is in REVERSE! I have to wait and try and try again until it gets into first. Anybody heard of this????

I have accidently put it in reverse when trying for 1st. I pushed too forcefully (and quickly) to the left and went in R without realizing it. No problem with the mini, just with me.

It could just be the "hill holder" releasing after 2 seconds. It applies the brakes after you release them to give you time to gas/clutch without drifting backwards on a hill. If you take too long, you'll feel it abruptly release and then start to drift backward. Kind of a strange sensation the first time you feel it.

I agree, on my 07 I found myself putting it in reverse when I thought it was 1st...

It takes quite an effort to put the gear lever into reverse, so no mistaking here... I called service today, they told me to bring it in first thing Monday morning before work. They said it is very unusual, but there may be some sort of a problem with gates on transmission. Meanwhile - scary! And today it happened on a level road.
