R56 What's with chicks driving MINIs in San Diego?
We experience lots of "non-wavers" also - male and female. I've practically fallen out the window waving and gotten ZERO response...
We see the SAME DS/B MCS on the 101 in Del Mar almost every Friday evening - you would think he would get the message by now - LOL!!! I WAVE and WAVE - one time I got a half tip of the hand from his steering wheel...

Gotta say that in the three weeks that I've had mine, I have yet to get a wave back down here in the West Palm area.
I think the wave has to do with how unique the vehicle is. I had a yellow (what else would it have been?) Xterra and it seemed like all yellow X drivers waved to each other too. Then there seemed to be more and more of us out on the roads and the uniqueness wore off, thus no more waves.
I ride a Harley too, and ALL motorcyclists wave to each other (not to the scooter riders though!
). That has been the tradition for bikers long since I can remember.
If you're driving your Mini in West Palm and you see me driving in my MY on MY, give me a wave and you'll get one back!

I drive mine in San Jose, CA and there are LOTS of them here, especially in Los Gatos! But no one waves back to me.
I have an AB/W MCS with checkerboard mirrors and white sports stripes and the exact same car was driving in the opposite direction so I waved, but the dude didn't wave back. I was sad!

See Minis everyday in San Diego. I don't wave, they don't wave and we go about our business as if the other people didn't exist. It's nothing personal.
The lack of waving doesn't bother me; the lack of a dealership in San Diego drives me bonkers.

Yours is the only post that really hits the nail on the head. Outside of NAM, and perhaps other MINI forums, no one knows about the "MINI wave."
In fact, it's probably not correct to call it the "MINI wave." It's more like the "NAM wave." Correctly identified as a wave that NAM members might give to each other, there's not going to be many of those. This is because out 1 million + MINIs in the world, how many owners belong to NAM and know about the wave. I suspect not many of those 1 million MINI owners.
Sidenote: On my superbikes most other riders on superbikes do give an acknowledgment to each other. In fact, one is considered odd to not wave or use some other signal to acknowledge back.
But superbike riders are a different crowd than MINI owners buying the car for reasons other than becoming a member of a "club" they know nothing about.

Unfortunetly too much of good thing and everyone owns one now. (well perhaps not now as they ruined them and made them huge). The wave for that vehicle is now lost. I don't think this will happen with the mini as there are just too many enthusiasts but more and more are just buying them for basic transportation.
My dealership had a giant poster on the outside of the service bay explaining the wave in pictures. To see if the OP was right, I waved at the first girl driving a white R53 Cooper S. We were both waiting to make a left turn in the same intersection, facing each other. I smiled and waved, and so did she.
