Change Orders

Anyone else have recent experience with change order requests, ie. could or could not, and how long after ordering?

Last Friday I placed an order for MCC BRG... I wanted BRG/BRG but while I was signing the paperwork, for some reason the salesman talked me into a black roof because he thought it would look so much better. I took his advice and then regretted after seeing dlpruk's BRG/BRG photos. I called him this morning and requested the change back... he's looking into it.

What should I do if he calls back and says no change?

If you can't change it, cancel it and start a new order! My MA really likes sunroofs. I don't. Boy, he tried to get me in one, and I looked to Nancy Reagan for inspiration for the first time. I just said "No!"

Scoopmama, I "just" went to a used car place that had a mini there with the sunroof. I really was still 2nd guessing myself as of this AM. I am in FL and it's a bit overcast today... but the door was open and I got to sit in it with the sunroof. It's nice... but way too much sun for me! It would have drove me nuts, and I didn't want to put some crappy thing between it to block the sun. My order is final and ALREADY in production!

kpwright, this is the 3rd (yes 3rd) car I ordered since Friday - 6 days ago. Each one went into production within 12 hours! The salesman did the same thing on my second car, and I spontaneously made a decision to get the sunroof. Once I got home and read up on them, I wanted to change it - but it was too late! I had to cancel once again my order and start new. This time - I am done!

I'm amazed at the number of slots your dealer has/had available for instant production! I could have also gotten a better build week had I gone with the MCS, but it just isn't what my wife and I wanted... But that doesn't mean it wasn't tempting. For us, that really was the big back-and-forth decision. In the end, we decided that a stripped down MC is just as classically cool as a loaded MCS in entirely different ways. If we really like life with this one, we may just go ahead and order an MCS to keep it company.

Ask that they use your deposit towards a new order. Nowadays dealerships won't have a problem selling your previous order, esp. if the salesman thinks the color is so great. If they claim it's non-refundable, fight it, talk to a manager, tell him/her it's not like you're getting a refund, you're just applying the deposit to a different car.

I have a good feeling you'll be OK, but that's just a feeling .

Agreed.

I'm sure I've made no secret that I think it's a better idea to learn about what you're about to do than go through this cancellation process, but you're right, Drew. I just don't like to go about making enemies of the dealerships. If you become the person that people roll their eyes at when they see you coming from a distance, then what bad karma that is... Just like with food service, don't **** off the people that handle your dinner! In my experience, I've gotten out of a lot of jams by working with people and building relationships. Networking ends up getting you perks in places you'd never expect!

Hey Tink...........Think I saw one of your "rejected" builds today at Ferman. Was sitting in it a while so I could do a comparison of Hi-Fi-vs-non stereos. PW/B MCS w/navi, redwood leather.

Finally ordered. We'll have to get together in SRQ county to compare the "twins" but I don't want mine to be jealous because she has less bling.

swflaboy, that's awesome!! She sure is pretty isn't she!?? The one I have is almost the same, but without the sunroof!! So you ordered a PW/B too?? I have been seeing more and more MINI's around!! My husband ordered a JCW Clubman a couple of weeks ago.. so we'll have two in the garage!

Pinky Demon, it's a well know fact that women ARE indeed different than men. Not that women CAN'T love and have interest in cars, but it is not as common... just like it is not that common that men don't love to shop, and get their hair and nails done. But whatever, it's no skin off anyone's nose as the dealer has received 2 car orders from us.

I'd say its uncommon for women to be interested in the finer details and tuning of cars but not understandable. I think its important to know what you are buying (esp. when it costs $20k+) and what you are hurtling down the freeway at 70 mph regardless of whether you are a man or a woman. I know just as many men who buy cars simply for looks without checking "under the bonnet" as women.

It seems that here at NAM though, we are all intimately familiar with our cars... in a good way!

I just think it's great you found a car that does that for you. And you have that beautiful interior to compete with so the hair and nails are essential.

ahhh.. that's why I have a husband! No, seriously, it's not an excuse, I just have depended on him or my father in all my car purchases. However. since buying my MINI and finding this forum I can honestly say I now have a genuine interest!! I surely will now be a better car purchaser in the future!

Thanks swflaboy!! I couldn't be more happy, and I know you'll love yours as well!! I did start something - as I refused to let my husband drive my MINI!! Told him he'd have to buy his own.. and he did!! I have not yet seen a clubman ANYWHERE around Sarasota.. he for sure has be one of the very few!

I hope I didn't offend, Tinker, but as a girl myself, I get a little defensive when people think I don't know anything about cars. I've been hanging in the garage talking engines since I was old enough to pass tools to my Dad.

There's also a slight advantage with mechanics when you can say with confidence when the problem is the starter, carb, etc. They don't think they can fleece you if they know you know a thing or two about cars!

Good for you tuesday!! No offense taken at all and I tip my hat to you. You're right.. you absolutely have an advantage when it comes to approaching a mechanic.. like I said - I have had not much prior interest, but since purchasing my MINI... I am eagerly learning!!

Tinker...tell me about getting carried away...I kept going back and forth on getting the MINI with my wife, she really wanted it and it would have been the first non-Honda I owned...I know...Honda...safe, reliable, not the most exciting. Anyway...she talked me into going into the dealership and we took a test drive. I was sold when my MA told me to go around this corner and DO NOT step on the breaks. After taking that corner three more times we returned to the dealership and signed the papers! Totally unlike me but totally worth it! Congratulations on your soon to be new car!

I posted in the Week 40 Support Group thread but I figured I owed it to Tink to come clean over here too.

After spending a week reading post after post on NAM about various options and features I too started to second guess my choices and by Saturday, I just had to go to the dealership to appease my curiousity. Stuff like: Is the astro black paint really blusih? what does anthracite headliner look like? Can I get fog lights later? etc.

I'm pretty sure as soon as my MA saw me, she knew I was there to question my choices and she immediately walked me around the showroom and in the garage to see MINIs with various add-ons. We went back to her desk and she whipped out the Change Order form and asked if there was anything else I wanted to add or change while we were at it.

I sat there apologizing profusely for being indecisive and not thinking through all these little details in the beginning (thinking of all the times I had rolled my eyes at other people on NAM changing their orders mid-stream).

Its official! Roll your eyes at me too! I not only added fog lights front and rear but I changed the color of the vehicle. I shake my head at myself. Feel free to join in. Boy, it sure felt good to be able to make the changes and get exactly what I wanted (even if I didn't know last week exactly hat that was).

LOL me to as a woman of 48, I am now on my 61st car... my father was a collector, and knowledge of cars is pretty amazing, I find love in each one....I have street raced in Japan for many years, and found the love of Driving,,

Now that I am older my love is still there, my son gets a kick when the sales person, asks "sweetie do you want me to show you how to drive stick" I take them on a test drive they will tell their grandkids about!

I'm in the same boat. I didn't have anyone to teach me as a kid or teenager about cars. I am not all that knowledgable about cars but since purchasing my Mini Cooper and found this site I have learned a LOT and my interest to know more is growing as well. My Nigel is 2 months old now. Wow how time flies. He survived Ike without any damage and I am grateful for that :D

LOL. I'm glad to see you do your homework!

jjp007, I'm glad to hear your MINI survived Ike. I can't imagine thinking about a storm that could wash away my MINI (shudders at the thought).
