R56 big bucks!
You don't need an S, go for a Cooper. To your dad, it'll sound like you're making a wiser choice with regard to price and mileage. You will still have a blast driving the Cooper; it isn't really THAT much slower than an S, and besides, even a Cooper is much better than a loaded Yaris or Civic, in many ways.
Trust me, get the Cooper.

Premium doesn't cost that much more than regular these days. In my area the current cost is approximately $3.80 regular and $4.00 premium. So if you average 10 gallons per fill-up you would pay $40 for premium instead of $38 for regular. Big deal. Use premium and keep your car happy. Yes, that $2 extra will add up over time, so just be sure to include that in your calculations for the total cost of ownership over X number of years.
It releases extra extra 5 lbs of turbo boost. Im jk. Its the gear shifter... either you downshift or upshift... but it is unlike the SMG of M cars... still have a torque converter which technically classifies the car as automatic...
You should test drive one... manual is easy to learn... just practice...

I don't think I could stand to have a MINI with an Auto (but it's not even an option on the JCW). Learning to drive a manual is easy-peasy and very satisfying.

You might have misunderstood the young man, what he might have meant was that you'll have a fun (gay) time in a Toyota.
Possible?
