You don't need an S, go for a Cooper. To your dad, it'll sound like you're making a wiser choice with regard to price and mileage. You will still have a blast driving the Cooper; it isn't really THAT much slower than an S, and besides, even a Cooper is much better than a loaded Yaris or Civic, in many ways.

Trust me, get the Cooper.

You can put regular in an S. Manufacturer recommends premium, not requires. Still though, it's not that much of a difference in cost. And if you could get a gas card you can eliminate the price difference altogether.

Premium doesn't cost that much more than regular these days. In my area the current cost is approximately $3.80 regular and $4.00 premium. So if you average 10 gallons per fill-up you would pay $40 for premium instead of $38 for regular. Big deal. Use premium and keep your car happy. Yes, that $2 extra will add up over time, so just be sure to include that in your calculations for the total cost of ownership over X number of years.

I can confirm that flappy paddles on an Auto are not anything like using the SMG of a M3/M5/M6. I own a M3 and have driven all 3 in anger. The MINI flappy paddles is just a silly marketing gimmick, IMHO.

I don't think I could stand to have a MINI with an Auto (but it's not even an option on the JCW). Learning to drive a manual is easy-peasy and very satisfying.
