R56 About to order a MCS....... REAR FOG LIGHTS OR NOT?
When it is really foggy, you are meant to turn your fogs lights on and the main headlights down to side lights - this way your main lights are not reflecting in the fog at eye level - the fog lights shine lower. This is why high beams are even worse in the fog.
The rear fog lights are required by law in Europe and are high-intensity. They are very annoying when left on in clear conditions. In most cars, if not all, you have to turn them on physically every time you turn the car on to avoid leaving them on by accident.
People also forget that driving in fog is like driving in light rain - use your wipers occasionally to improve visibility.
Being from the UK, fog is one of my areas of expertise!
As for ordering them here in the US - I agree with what has been said - having a blank toggle switch and panel in the rear filled is worth $100

All good points, but I'd like to point out that when the rear fogs are installed as extra brake/tail lights using the kit from Minspeed, they're not any brighter than the regular tail lights and therefore no more annoying to other drivers than the tail lights themselves. When the brakes are applied, they're about as bright as the regular brake lights. My last Mini was rear-ended while braking by a distracted driver who claimed she didn't notice my "little" car until the last minute. I really believe that extra brake lights are more beneficial in most scenarios except possibly for owners who live in areas where fog is a real concern.
Good point fbirch, I was wondering about the brightness of the factory-installed rear fogs.
S/he probably backs in because it's the MINI "display" custom. (Gee, I hate that one--I personally don't like to back into spaces--problems with my eyes!)
Nope... car is already en route to the VDC.
Not too late
- the ugly blank-out plates in rear bumper valence get filled with the same good-looking light assemblies as MINI installs at the factory when they build the car with factory fog lights.
- Every time you switch on your head lights, these after market rear valence lights will automatically come on and act as extra tail lights. They give the rear of the car a very disctinctive look at night, that is unlike most other cars, and improves the visibility to ther drivers. Unlike the factory fog lights, they are not excessively bright and annoying to other drivers, so it's perfectly okay to run them all the time - even when it's not foggy.
- While not as bright as the factiry fogs would have been, they still provide extra light down lower than the regular tail lights, and thus still give you some of the benefit of the factory lights when it really is foggy. Even better, you don't have to remember to switch them on - they come on automatically as long as the headlights are on.
- When you apply the brakes, they get brighter and provide extra warning to drivers behind you that you're slowing.
The rear fog lights functioning as fog lights increases your visibility whether you're braking or not.
I think the ideal system would allow you to cycle them from fog lights to brake lights to off from the toggle switch, but that's just my preference.

If you had ordred these lights to be added during the build process, they would NOT have been installed as brake lights. They would have been installed as fog lights only, which means you could really only use them when it's foggy or rainy, and only then if you remember to throw a switch. If you install the after market kit from Minspeed, here's what you'll get:

I was just all caught up at checking out that link at minspeed for the rear brake light conversion that I forgot.
I didn't order the Rear Fog Light and so far I am NOT sorry I don't have it. I don't miss the toggle and because I wanted a cohesive color scheme on the rear of Molly I decided against having the Rear Fog Light.
I have a question.
The rear fog light is not as bright as the taillight
in my opinion. I've not driven behind myself ha ha ha.
The taillight/brake light is a huge (#1156 bulb) bulb
I think at 7W/21W. The foglight bulb (not sure of #) is
only slightly larger than the side marker bulbs.
Why is it that some people have the opinion that
the rear fog is burning out people's eyes?

A rear fog is SUPPOSED to be brighter than the taillights! By definition, that's what a rear fog is! "Burning eyes out" sounds a little severe, but you do want the extra brightness in inclement weather. I wonder if an LED or even brighter halogen bulb can be used back there......?
One of the top three reasons that I ordered the Cooper vs the MCS was for the center-of-the-bumper rear fog! I love the look. Just my personal opinion though...your opinions may vary!

The rear fog light allows someone to use you as a "guide" in foggy or rainy conditions without being so close behind you. Folks do that . . . find a car to follow in poor visability conditions. Much better to have them further behind you. It is a true safety feature, anywhere it rains.
That said, it is also a good way to help stragglers find the MINI club while cruising down freeways and in other conditions where the crew gets split up.
I find following a MINI with the rear fog light to be just about as bright and obnoxious as all those mopar freaks out there with their bright front foglights on day and night. I can't say I haven't switched on the rear fog to try to let the RAM behind me know I'm annoyed.

Yeah....I'm a little "wrong in the head", though most non-motoring folks don't even know what the heck a rear fog is!

Actually, I was going for the S initially, but decided that it was a little more than I needed. Also wanted the Vanos thing with the normally aspirated 1.6 vs. the turbo (again, only my personal preference...the turbo motor is a blast). Finally, those two rear fogs on the S....just one too many for me.
Hey...Cooper or Cooper S....either one is going to be a blast!
