However its only ten cents more per litre right? and it doubles the mileage on its gas burning brother.
Here in the U.S., and especially in California, the tax on diesel is absurdly high (I'm not sure why) which artificially inflates the price. It runs about 30-50 cents more than premium.

Never. We are not a country of real solutions, we are a country of political correctness. Right now, California doesn't think diesels are politically correct, so we still have insane, unreasonable laws restricting diesel cars, which keeps most European diesels out of this market.

The MC (non S) is 13,000 pounds in the UK, which should mean at least $26,000 here, but in all reality it is only $18,000...so i would guess the D to only be at most a thousand or 2 more
It's VAT and CO2 tax that makes the price difference, get rid of those, and the conversion rate works over just fine.

If the MCD got better mileage than the MC it'd sell here even with more expensive fuel. Most put 91 gas in their Mini (.20 more than 87) anyway. Deisel in AZ is almost a dollar more than regular, I don't get that myself. Too bad we'll not see one anytime soon. Anyone notice the last Formula 1 race (LeMans) winner was a deisel?

I could see people going for a diesel MINI- why look like a pretentious ****** driving a Prius when you can get 60MPG in a car that handles like a go-kart?

The answer seems obvious!

Most of the Prius drivers I've seen are more interested in making a statement than saving the world. A diesel Mini will look like any other Mini. Nothing else looks like a Prius so it's instant snob appeal.
