BTW - the models I were got a Samsung D406/407 GSM ($40 at that popular auction site) and an e815 Moto CMDA ($50 on Craigslist). Both discontinued (hence the low price) but 4 stars at Phonescoop and no contracts of course.

CA

CA has a law becoming active July 1 I think. (I don't carry an electronic ball and chain, so I have no concern about MY non existent personal usage) I believe under 18 you can't use one at all, and 18 up you have a hands free setup. The fine will be a whopping $20. Thanks a lot, lobbyists! The things are a menace. I see people at night on the freeway that appear to be DRUNK, and you finally get near them to get by and they're chatting away on the phone. I see teenage girls wheeling around corners, steering with one hand, phone in the other, blabbing away. Some "experts" feel they're as big a hazard as driving drunk. I believe they are right.
I have a method to deal with cellphones in cars. Anytime I am next to/alongside someone yapping on a phone, I just keep looking forward but I LAY ON MY HORN LOUD AND LONG. I love my Mini's LOUD HORN. This next item is illegal (aren't all the fun things illegal?), but there are jammers available on ebay that work about 150 feet out from your car. They run about eighty bucks. Flip the switch, that phone near you is DEAD. Get one and you'll be the electronic Paul Kersey to cellphone users. I'm all for it. Vigilante action; taking back the streets one cellphone user at a time.

Ill tell ya what this all opens up...

Texting while driving...

Try it, and try not to die at the same time...or frustrate yourself to death.

Believe me, Im all in favor of getting rid of distractions, especially ones that disable a driver from performing...however I know from personal experience that when the law says no, I do what I can to get around it...thats me, and most likely a few others too... No speeding/radar detector... anyone else in the same boat now?

People are going to do what they want to, what they think they NEED to do, and if its communicating while driving...then thats whats gonna happen...

I don't even try to change my radio station when I'm driving. And when people ask me why I don't answer my cell phone, I tell them I was driving.

I have a friend who texts so much he does it without even thinking, almost unconsiously. He scared himself pretty badly one day when he caught himself texting while riding his motorcycle.
