What kind of rust bucket was he driving? I think manufacturers, in general, have no been proactive in coming up with more resistant materials and paint finishes against these type of parking lot assaults. I would say that 90% of all damage that can happen to a car usually takes place in parking lot facilities. I think manufacturers, body shops and the PDR industry prefer to maintain the status quo for as long as possible because what incentive to them there is by creating cars with scratch/ding resistant panels? Saturn had a solution in their cars, albeit that solution looked crappy because the polymer plastic door panels had gaps the size of the Grand Canyon. The technology exists to make our cars more resistant to these types of attacks, yet the auto industry prefers to keep all of us in the dark ages when it comes to this. Time to demand better people. For $30K on this day and age, door dings and dents should have already be a thing of the past.

The simplest and most satisfying thing is to get the a**hole so mad they swing. then the courts help you reomve his car via financial loss in the impending law suit you file. Viola!! He can't ding anyone else's car... Seen it work 3 times...

Not sure, it was older though and 2 door, so he should have been careful about swinging them out like that because they were longer.

I don't believe it is the auto manufacturers' responsibilities to deal with idiots. You've got it right (where bolded). It's up to people to grow some awareness as to not damage others' property. Unfortunately, it seems that is too much to ask.

Unfortunately, we can't change people. Some people simply don't care about cars, nor their own or anyone elses. They only way to fight back is for manufacturers to come up with better technologies to better deal with these problems. Unfortunately, car manufacturers prefer to keep the status quo on technology so every 5 years or so people come back and buy a new car, because they can't stand looking at an old beat up car.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves, I never park next to anyone if it is possible. Every since I picked up my MINI I wake up an hour early to park in the corner spot at school so that I can move over and allow more space between me and the car next to me. I can't stand it when I park in the boonies and there just HAS to be someone that parks right next to me when there are 15 other spots open right next to me. It's not like their car is going to get lonely.

The worst was when I was parked and this older fellow karate kicked his door open while he was on the cell phone as I walked out. I just stared at him in disbelief as I couldn't believe what he had just done. As I walked closer he got back in his car and just sat there while I looked over my car. Thankfully he had parked just far away enough that his door just barely missed mine.

That is because unfortunately most of the human population at large is DUMB.

I was thinking as soon as he started opening the door, "No, he's not going to swing the door open." Well, he did! I jumped out and said, "Why would you just let go of your door like that - you can see how windy it is!" He's very low key and says, "Oh, did the wind catch it?" Very unconcerned. When he sees how irate I am, he says we are parked close to the edge of our space (he had just pulled through -illegally- to park the wrong way right next to us!). I pointed to all of the empty spaces surrounding our car, and I asked him again why would just let go of his door with such high wind. He says, "I had to get my wallet." His girlfriend could have gotten his stupid wallet!! She was just standing there silently watching this exchange. I had him open his door again (while holding onto it tightly) so we could line it up to see where the contact was. Turns out his door hit the black plastic part at the bottom of the car and it was only slightly scuffed. Thank you, God! Why are people so amazingly rude and/or oblivious??!! If I hadn't been there, he would have just walked off I'm sure!
yikes... glad to here the MINI came out mostly unscathed.

You guys are lucky. The MINI is well... mini compared to my behemoth Charger.

If you ever see a red Charger parked in the BFE section of a parking in the Northern suburbs of Chicago feel free to park next to me I won't ding ya!

One of the guys on my forums threw a shopping car on top of someones hood in a similar altercation.
