Pull the **** off the shift lever. It take a lot of effort. Then you use a paint scraper or flat head screw driver to pry the boot off the ****. Don't just rip them apart as some say as that is how I tore the boot.

Learned this while replacing the **** with this:

Anyone know the dimensions of the shaft? I have a friend who can get me a beautiful wood **** for $80, but he may not have the diameter.

I seem to be missing a step...

I just got my new **** from Whalen Machine, I got the **** to release from the shaft, but the question now is which piece actually releases the boot, ie the piece just below the **** or the piece under the boot???? A little guidance here would be helpfull..............

I used a Whalen adapter (a very nice piece of work) and went to Watson's and talked that service guy into selling me a single ball out of the marbled pool ball set. Then I had my Father bore a hole in the ball and epoxy it together. Whalen sells the simple pool ball shifters but I wanted something darker.

The place the paint scraper in between the seem where the leather mets the ****. There is a ring that is sewn at the top of the boot that is snapped to the ****. It helps keep the boot tight to the ****. But it also makes it a pain to come apart. Hope that helps
