"Above poster", please take that internet article with a grain of salt. While it does hold some truths, it is clearly written from an anti-insurance company point of view.

I'll figure it all out in a few hours when I get to the dealership, get them to quote me on repairs, and them decide whether to use the insurance, or pay out of pocket.

Dealership report:

854 for new tire and rim. Cannot tell if further damage occured until mini is up on the lift to be aligned. Then we can see if the bushings, control arms, etc... are damaged. there is a good chance that the price can go up. If it does, chances are I'll call insurance. if not, then I'll pay out of pocket for the new rim and tire : )

You must have money to burn.

No state in the nation has a UM deductible even close to $854.

My deductible is 500... on regular claims and UM claims. According to my state farm rep.

That's probably the highest UM dedictible in the country.

Tells me Florida has a lot of hit-and-run accidents and people driving around without insurance.

Either way, you're still throwing away at least $354 by not filing a claim. Myeh... it's just money.

Ps. $500 is a good deductible for Collision coverage. I carry $1000, but I don't recommend it for most people.

DAMN, not to rub it in, but that's some serious bad luck! And I thought that I'm accident prone...

They won't hate you. That's what they're there for. Of course, if you become so accident prone that you're no longer a good risk for them, they'll just terminate you. Well... not YOU, but your policy.

Hope that wasn't a bad accident yesterday !

I thought UM is a no-fault claim.

It is. But look up a few posts. tbone also had an accident where he rear-ended another vehicle.

I don't know of any states that cancel policies for just one at-fault accident. But then again, I don't know what else is on tbone's driving record.

That's what I mean--the UM is no fault, but of course his Range Rover accident is his. Do the two add up to a problem?

Those two alone, no.

I was just telling him that the insurance company doesn't hate anyone, they just terminate them. I see the joke didn't work.

Of course the insurance companies don't hate people who get in accidents and file claims! Because they get to turn around and raise your insurance rates, getting more of your money. You don't think you pay out all that money to them each month for years for your accidents, do you? If you do, wait till you get in one and have to file a claim. Then watch your premiums go up. To pay for what they just paid out for you, although they will claim it's because you become a bigger risk. All respect to CR&PW&JB, but insurance companies are a scam. I would rather invest that money myself, and if I get in an accident and can't pay, sue me. I don't feel it's right to pay for all these other people who don't want or have insurance. And the illegals, that's a whole 'nother story......

I was expecting a premium increase because the payout was about $23,000 (total loss), but there were no repercussions. I'm with Nationwide.

Actually, for every 100 claims we pay out, only about 20 percent of them result in increased premiums.

And if you want to narrow it down to just at-fault accidents with payouts, it's still only about 45 percent.

There's a lot of circumstances that come into play. Far more than I'm willing to spend the time explaining. But for instance, someone who goes 6 years without an at-fault accident (with my company) will not get surcharged for their first accident.

And by the way, even when someone gets surcharged for at-fault accidents, 99 percent of the time, that surcharge does not come close the amount paid out on the claim. That's not the purpose of the surcharge. That surcharge is to pay for the increased risk you now present. See... there is hard evidence that someone who has one at-fault accident is more likely to be involved in another at-fault accident than someone who has not had one.

And, if you think it's all a scam, then don't carry any auto insurance. Even in mandatory liability states, you don't really have to carry it. Just sign a document that says you are self-insured. That is, you are promising to cover any liability issues that arise yourself. Of course, you do have to present evidence to the State that you have the financial means to back up your statement.

So last week, my MINI was sideswiped by a PT Cruiser,

It bent the rim on my car, which caused a flat tire.

Had it towed to Tom Bush MINI. On Monday, Joe @ Tom Bush ordered a new wheel and tire for my car. Estimated almost 900 dollars. The rim at 320 or so. and the tire at almost 300. Plus mount/balance/align, disposal fee, and labor.

Only thing we were worried about, was when the MINI was to be put up on the alignment machine, if it would align properly. If not, I'd need bushings, control arms, struts, etc... all driving the cost up, you get the picture.

I didn't want to claim this on the insurance, either

Today, wednesday, I waited at the dealership all day, the parts arrived as he promised, and the car was finished. aligned 100% correct.

well I had a bright idea. MINI Sales sells MINI accessories like rims and such, so I wondered if they stocked my rim, but cheaper, on that side of the dealership.

Sure enough, 255.00 for the rim...

so Joe charged me what the book says, not what the parts department said haha

I'm stoked I got my car back with great service like that !
