It's a cool feature. BMW remotes do this too. The only thing that's odd about it is the "Comfort Access" feature. The fact that the keys recharge when you put them in the slot means that you have to put even the keys on a Comfort Access car into the slot from time to time, I believe, which takes away some of the benefit of that feature.

It also contains all the current info about your MINI as well...if you watch when you go in for service they put your key in a slot thats connected to the computer and it pulls up everything about your car right there

Actually,
the key contains the VIN and mileage only.

The BMW central computer has all you other records (options, service history...) that's pulled as soon as the VIN is retrieved...

Pretty slick until the dealer looses contact with the mother ship

So I'm a little confused.
A. I know that the remotes are rechargable via the slot.
However that said...am I reading this correct from you guys that putting the key in the slot to recharge it will wipe the Comfort Access features?

No. it shouldn't. But only the non-comfort keys recharge. They want you to use both keys at least once a year to keep the batts charged.

The non comfort access keys have rechargable batteries. The comfort access keys have non-rechargable, replacable batteries.

You've got that backward. The proper question is whether the non-comfort access key looks any different from the regular key?

The only difference is that the comfort access key has a removable back cover. They look the same, otherwise.
