Warning lamps came on & freaked out the wife

My wife called and told me the little light that looks like an engine came on while driving in both the Tach and Speedometer. In addition, the triangle question mark came on in the tach.
I checked the stored check control messages and there was no written information. The engine picture came on solidly in the upper tach display. No flashing engine displays. As best as I can tell, the manual says that "Engine malfunction with adverse effect on exhaust emissions. You can continue your journey, but moderate your speed and exercise due caution. Have the vehicle checked as soon as possible."
OK - what qualifies as "due caution". It's a 2007 MC with 488 miles on it. Anyone else have this problem? The dealer is 95 miles away.

I guess I'll be the first to ask you to check the gas cap; on a lot of cars, the check engine light comes on if the gas cap is either off or not properly tightened. From some mechanics I have talked to, it's apparently the most common cause.

Yes, it is the most common cause. You should have received a booklet/pamphlet titled "On Board Diagnostics" with your owners manual packet. It states that the most common cause of the system coming on is a loose or missing gas cap.

Here in Oregon where we don't pump our own gas, my MA explicitly pointed it that out to us when I took delivery of Demi 2 days ago.

There have been a few (more than peck, but less than a bushel) cars with this worry, and, about the same milage. Dealers are aware and I think have a programming fix due out soon.
Our 07 MCS did it for about 3 minutes. I shut off the vehicle, restarted, and it reset before I got into 3rd gear. Hasn't done it since.
Do a search on this board. Lots of info.

She said she gassed it up yesterday. I'll start there. Thanks for reminding me about the gas cap.

It's a common problem with the MC. The cars can be reprogrammed now--fix has been out for about 3 weeks or so.

When I first started up my car yesterday, a warning text about excessive emissions came up. I went and got gas after that and the engine light and warning came on again. Then I stopped and started the engine again and it disappeared. Hasn't come back since.
