R56 Torn between two MINIs...
bingo, they need all the help they can get, the non turbo is a dog
they should, I was pretty blunt, and truthful, the MC is a dog, I could not drive it daily, the MSC is ok, better with mods i'm sure
I'm coming off a M3, which I also drove hard, I sold it to get the MCS if that says anything about the MCS.

I test drove both MC and MCS automatic. If I bought a MC, I would have to be in sport mode all the time. With the regular mode, I feel like I am on a delay. The sport mode is much more fun and I am okay with it. I ended up with the MCS because it drives so much better and after pricing both out with options I wanted, the difference is like $1500 or less than $1 a day for 5 years payment.
I too test drove both the MC & the MCS (both automatics). Oddly enough I was pleased with the performance of the MC and was ready to get it. But my wife (last car a Mustang GT) insisted on the MCS. A month and a 1/2 w/ the MCS and I am very pleased. It is returning 32 mpg commuting 25 miles each way to Microsoft.
In the end it is a personal decision. Both cars are well balanced, quick (if not fast), and a blast to bomb around corners with. My recommendation? If you have the extra money get the MCS... if not stick w/ the MC.

You were too blunt I think. The Cooper is no dog...we have ample proof of that. But you were truthful about your personal opinion...fine. A Cooper does not meet your expectations and seemingly neither does an MCS w/o mods. That is one way of looking at MINIs...no problem. But it is not the only way...not by a long shot. You...and the entire MINI enthusiast community...best get used to that.

The MC has plenty of power. I drive it everyday and enjoy it very much. It is not a street racer. It is not an M3. It does not try to pretend to be an M3.
The MC is just not a car for you. That does not make it a dog.
Wow a lot of people that i have come across on this thread are "thin skinned" or should i say sensitive to remarks. Not something im used to. As much of a spirited motorist as I am (conservative way of putting it) and autocrosser, I love a powerful car that isnt limited to straight-aways. I have an 05 subaru wrx *stage 3* that romps out power that i use as a d/d and in autox. Wrx are not great for top end power (60 - 100 mph unless they have a turbo upgrade with a larger housing) making it a blast for the twisties. Which is why i ordered a mcs to add to my garage.
So all in all it really is hard to not have a biased opinion but then again not everyone is the same. So its a no brainer for my case to get a mcs b/c the mca just doesnt do it for me. I agree that if you are undecided, to go get the mcs b/c you will kick yourself later for it. Most people that own a mca that i have talked to, steer to the "sunday drive" spectrum. If this isnt you then you will not be disappointed with a mcs.
I for one have worked on cars my whole life and plan to race till the day I die. Thats my route, not speaking for anyone else. I didnt know if anyone that has similar view points and is in a mcs vs. mc debate? Maybe they can relate and it can help with their decision process. Who knows, but thats my .02.

I think sometimes it comes down to this....the Mini was designed by Sir Alec to be a very capable, engaging, efficient, and cool commuter car...it because famous in this regard. John Cooper went the tuning route...with equally famous results. So you have two schools of thought around Minis and that same set of mindsets, to some degree, is still around even today. No point in fighting over it...the MINI is a capable, engaging, and spirited car that has a huge range of enthusiasts. This is a benefit and a strength....and sometimes a problem when we're both looking at the same car and seeing it through only one perspective. In spite of MINIs marketing to the performance-minded, it still has a great deal to offer to other types of enthusiasts, too.
if these are the examples of the "mini community"
calling someone a jackass for stating an honest, truthful opinion
well, I'm not sure I want any part in it at this point
the OP wanted to know about an S vs non S, and my opinion is, the non S is a dog, 117hp, it's a completely different car than the S in my opinion
if your opinion differs that's fine, but calling someone a jackass simply because you dont agree with them, well if that's the best argument it really does show your intelligence

that stat alone speaks for itself
go test drive both, test drives dont lie
Honest and truthful to you, perhaps That does not make it reflect reality. Point of fact, it does not reflect reality. Just your perception of reality. My perception states quite the opposite of yours. The MC is a hoot to drive. The fun, in this context, is not how fast I managed to get there. The fun is all about how I got there.
But I will gladly acknowledge that is my opinion. It is also my truth. Whether or not that truth is the same for others is up to them. That is why the best way to know what is right for any individual is to simply define thier purpose for the Mini and then keep test driving the various combinations to find the one that fits thier needs.
It is not a matter of buying an MCS or you will regret it later. It is a matter of buying the right car for the task at hand. All the NFR and OB owners ar MC's and I have yet to run into one that has regretted that choice.
Oh, it is one thing to be blunt. It is another to be antagonistic. Whether you meant to be or not, you sounded very antagonistic and still do. This may surprise you, but not everyone cares about how much horsepower is under the hood. Just because you do not like the MC, does not make it a bad car. Just a bad choice for you.

Yeah, that would have been a lot more useful. And your suggestion to test drive is sage advice. A hell of a lot more useful than saying the Cooper is a dog.
once I get called a jackass for stating my opinion, which iI still stand by, well yeah, I'm gonna get antagonistic dont you think?
I never said the MC was not fun, it simply needs 50 more hp, drive the MC, and the MCS back to back, the MC feels like it needs more
and if mini offered a 2.5 liter twin turbo MCS, you bet I would be in line for that, even if it was a 5000 $ option

We're getting an MC because we wanted a fun car that'll be sipping gas unlike my wife's current commuter which guzzles it (02 Tahoe). Furthermore, I have a leadfoot and a few tickets over the years to prove it. Last thing I need is a car that'll propel me to ticket driving speeds too easily. I'm sure the MCS would be fun, but I'm afraid that it'd be too much fun. It all depends what you're looking for. From the little test drive I took, it looks like the MC will still be fun to drive in the twisties without being too tempting.
You just don't get it, do you? You were not called a jackass for stating your opinion. As I said, stick around and maybe you will learn. Or, maybe when you decide you have a question and post one, you will see the difference between an opinion with some use versus a jackass remark.
