R56 How to see the green light when Mini is first at the intersection?
Sorry D2M, didn't mean to be sarcastic about Houston intersections. But as someone had pointed out, just cuz you can hang back in TX doesn't mean the intersections work the same way in NJ. And with some of the narrow intersections and high-strung lights here, I'd have to hang WAY back in order to see the green light change. As it is now, some (not all) of them are totally out of my field of vision once I get up to the appropriate stopping point.
So for $12, I'll solve my problem.
Besides, I live in a rural area policed by swarms of state trooper patrols. Don't think I want to attract attention to my speedy little Mini by hanging suspiciously far back from marked stop lines.

Actually, in-road sensors are almost never used anymore. Around here, where there are sensors, they usually are mounted on light poles or cables. On at least one major road in NJ, they installed a fiber optic system that monitored traffic build-up at lights on the main road and feeder streets.
Yep, there are all kinds of sensors in use. In the old days there were magnetic and radar and ultrasound. Induction loops are the most prevalent here, and can be sawn into the surface or as we do buried shallow during new road construction. The pavement is installed over it so you'd never see it. A relatively new type is a movie cameras mounted high on poles. The picture feed is hardwired to a computer in the signal controller cabinet. Software allows you to draw in detection areas on the screen - once done, any vehicle entering the detection area is counted. We have a few of these in place but the technology is expensive and camera angle is critical.
