Electrical Troubles

hey folks. Jumped on here as the FB forums are full of clueless people that google answers for you!

I bought my friend a 2009 R55 S, really nice colour spec 102,000 miles British Racing Green on ebony/cirrus. I paid $900 for it with new tyres, timing chains, cylinder head, and quite a few other things. PO sold it after it started having issues.

When I was there it was dead, we jumped it with my Rover and it died a block away, grabbed a new battery and I drove it home running very rough..figured it was simple and so I popped the valve cover off, re-timed it, and it still ran like crap. Noted a vacuum leak coming from many broken places where the PO did shoddy work. Alternator was not plugged in..we ran it out of voltage with no battery light on.

Got new cam bolts, new valve cover, PCV hose, and a few other misc. items in and it definitely runs better..but now we can't figure out the damn lighting. Bunch of lights don't work.. and best part is the horn activates (instead of the horn) the right head light, the interior lights, and "night mode".

So assuming that all of this was likely a steering angle sensor (more specifically the actual clock spring assembly within), we replaced it with a known good used part and now all it does is what it was doing, and the windshield wipers are a constant on (LOL!).

so that brings us to the FRM

but I'll consult others on it first

cheers

Rob

Blaming the site for having this post not appear in the "new posts" section.

Where you able to sort it out?

the lights not working and maybe the windows are attributes of a failed FRM. The horn and light issue might be due to plug confusion. I mistakenly put the side signal light on the horn plug lol

Also, if the car has a sunroof, inspect for water leaks and possible fusebox damage.

Have not sorted yet, actually just bought a new FRM and having it shipped here. There's someone that can program FRM2s so I'll have them do the programming and go from there.

I did think something was plugged wrong, but the horn did work when we first bought it, it's after we ran it out of voltage when it started having even more issues.

Oh, and I did not find any water leaks unfortunately. That's what happened to my R56 with an airbag light, a little bit of CRC226, compressed air, and a wire brush I was able to fix both the leak and airbag light by cleaning the curtain airbag connectors.

Feh... you had to mention sunroof leaks....
Early '13 Clubman, 80k miles, just last Monday noticed ponding water on right side (passenger's) floor. Earlier my rear hatch door kept unlatching spontaneously, which I thought odd.... Finding the water (front and rear!) clued me in to potential issues w/electric gubbins, so I mopped out the water best I could & had a dehumidifier running 24/7 for four days. Hatch door now doesn't unlatch spontaneously.

But this morning I found my windscreen wipers to be No Longer Operational. Nothing.
Washers work with a pull on the stalk. Fuse (#30, 15A) looks to be OK but I haven't tested it.

Maybe a relay? Wife's '06 Cabrio had similar issue years back, we swapped relays & they work now though don't always park down fully.
Local mechanic warned me about tubing coming loose from sunroof gutter drains, then water runs into wiring harness.

I know they're supposed to be BMW's but they're still built in the original MINI factory so maybe Lucas (Prince of Darkness) still haunts these things??

Hey all the Lucas parts in my Jaguar and Triumph work fine.

My 11 Clubman once had a bunch of warning lights (But still drove Ok). Dealer said TPMS Board was shorting out the CAN bus. Wonder if this could be something like that.

Update..Sure
I remembered to log in LOL!

We went ahead and installed the used FRM from eBay, I was able to program it in with my Snapon diag tool which surprised me. Everything is working outside of the right head light, which I noticed quite a bit of corrosion in the connector and so I believe the only fix for that is simply replacing the units..
