Water inside on passenger floor

After a quite heavy rainstorm, the passenger floor had a considerable amount of water on it. Has anyone else had this problem? This is the first time this has happened and nothing has been done to the car recently. When wifey got home last night I vacuumed the water up and got it as dry as possible. I did notice a tiny pool by what I assume is a drain that appears to go down beside the battery. I haven't had time to check this out yet. Maybe there is a plugged drain and water backed up and went into cabin through the cab air filter? Hope to get her out of it long enough to check it out. It is a 2008 clubman S

if you have a sunroof, open it and check the corners for blockage. pour some water and see if it drains. If they do, check the pipes right behind the windshield post plastic trim from inside. feel it for wetness.

I also wanted to add that if that battery cover, right cowl cover is loose by the windshield, water can leak through the cabin filter opening.

^^ Sunroof drains are usually the culprit, but I have seen a couple of improperly installed cowl panels that leak into the battery box area and can leak into the cabin filter.

You'll want to pull the carpet up on the passenger side and inspect the junction box (fuse box), and DSC speed sensor under the passenger seat for water damage. We have seen far too many cars through here that the junction box was full of corrosion as well as the wiring harness connectors to it, which causes all sorts of problems from lighting to no starts.

Just recently we had a car in that was so bad that the junction box was wasted, near every connector to it was full of corrosion, and the DSC speed sensor under the passenger seat was dead. Long story short, their insurance company totaled the car.

@NKFRY - how many Minis have you seen with a sunroof drain issue? I am currently Dead in the Water with water damage to my car. (Fuse Box was the prognosis) Tried to put under water damage claim for insurance, but they said it sounded mechanical and they wouldn't cover it.

I see this issue everywhere and on the forums, so just wondering what frequency or how often you all see this happen.

my brothers car had the sunroof issue too. Its totally beyond me how that rubber connecting part came loose. It was actually pretty snug to get it back over the roof drain tube again. I used a couple zip ties on it after we fixed it back in place.

FWIW he had a $500 bill to fix the connector that goes to the fuse box. one of the pins inside was rusted through/broken and he was getting weird dash lights.

I meant to reply to this earlier!

I actually got the car covered by my insurance! $500 bucks for the deductible and I was good as new. They replaced the carpet, checked the head liner, and replaced the fuse box down on the passenger side kick panel.

Car is back up and running. Don't take no from your insurance if they try and say water damage was caused by a mechanical malfunction... (it was)... but let them cover the costs!

I just had the same problem. No fuse box wetness. I suspect the battery box. Any suggestions? All of the water was dripping from the cabin air filter box but the filter itself is dry.

Yes. The small drain on the passenger side cowl was completely blocked. I cleaned it out. I hope this will solve the problem. The sun roof drains just fine.

Now, what black goop did BMW/MINI use to seal the cowl?

This I do not know...

If your Car begins to have weird issues it could be that corrosion is settling in! It took a good 3 weeks before my car actually stopped functioning due to the water damage.

This is the first time it happened. I wiped up the water. Checked the sunroof drains and headliner for dampness (There was none.) I checked the fuse box, it was dry as a bone, so I dried out the cabin filter box and noticed the small drain on the passenger cowl was blocked. I removed the cowl, cleaned the drain and reassembled everything. Hopefully, the clogged drain was the problem.

Update: I washed and waxed the Mini today. There was no water intrusion. I think clearing the passenger cowl drain did the trick.
