Gotcha. That's understandable. For me I was just going to pay my local exhaust shop $50 to swap the down pipe before inspection. Have you looked into high flow cats? Or does it not pass smog with that? The stock down pipe has the most restriction in he entire car. You get the most gains by going catless even without a tune and you have the ability to make a lot more power without the large restriction of that cat. That cat is huge! I would look into high flow cats if I were you. I would try to convince you for catless but I completely understand because of smog. But in the end the cat on the downpipe reduces aggressiveness of the overall car and you are not able to load an aggressive tune without a free flowing exhaust. Not sure how much power you want. But I just want you to be happy!

So here's what I'm reading on the forum. Even with a high flow catted DP I will still throw a CEL if the tune eliminates it that's one thing but the inspection sticker is a concern. If I replace the DP do I need a catback too if I want to run the stage 2 tune?

I don't get snag tested in MA so basically if I put a catless DP and do the tune they can clear the code?

Stage 2 requires a downpipe and inter cooler. Without a downpipe you will get a very mild tune. Still faster than you are now but cannot add much boost with the restriction of the downpipe.

I'm running stock other than the helix FMIC and JCW tuning kit intake. If the manic tune removes the CEL for the DP I'll just go catless and swap my OEM DP when I need a sticker. Thoughts on this?

is it safe to run it while I'm waiting for my tune? I'm not going to be able to get to NJ until next month but I can buy the DP now. Are you running stock exhaust after the DP?

5 hour drive I want you to be very satisfied. WMW is fine. I think mine was $280 shipped from Evolve Automotive.

100 cell cat that won't throw a code ? I'd have to see that. The 200's seem to be 50/50 at best , I think the factory is 400 so running 25% of the cat seems impossible to not get a cat insuff code.

removing the CEL and passing emissions is 2 DIFFERENT things, my jb can tool removes CEL but emission are NOT READY IE, FAIL inspection.

So I shouldn't put the DP on until I'm ready to get the tune?

If I put a DP on I'm just going to do catless because the the tune will mask the CEL and the catless DPs are almost half the money.

In Massachusetts we are allowed to have one system in not ready status and still get a sticker. But from what I'm gathering the manic tune uses stock emissions so I can put my OEM DP back on and get the sticker then go back to my fun pipe.

Most people are fine running it. Some early N14 engines (like mine) would intermittanly go into reduced power mode due to the cat code, but I've only every seen this on '07 models. You should be fine.

I upgraded my exhaust before I got my catless DP. All my mods are in my sig (unless you're using NAM mobile) I have DP-Back NM Engineering exhaust installed.

I work at a Mercedes store and we have a BMW tech that has some experience with these cars and has tuned and modded a lot of 335s he said I'm fine to throw the catless DP on with stock exhaust he said the only thing that will happen is the CEL and it will sound like a beast. I'm just going to buy it.

Oh yeah, its beastly. Pretty tame under 3k. Once over and at WOT then its very loud. I enjoy it quite a bit The wife however does not care for it on the highway as there is a bit of drone.

Can run a downpipe just fine. Will notice immediate gains without the tune. With the tune you have the ability to make so much more power. You can put the downpipe on now as long as you don't mind the CEL. I had a downpipe with no tune for maybe a full year. Just cleared the code with my scan gauge every week or so.

I would recommend the little gasket also , as the 2007+ R56 Cooper S and The Factory JCW N14 airbox uses the factory panel filter as a seal. otherwise it might rattle a bit. John Cooper Works Tuning Kit Intake does not come with that gasket seal.

Downpipe came today. Here's some pics. Looks awesome. Thank you to way motor works for the quick shipping and quality product. I'll post a sound clip tonight with it hooked up to the factory exhaust.

OMG! This thing sounds so great over 3k rpm!! I'm going to get myself in trouble because that sound is intoxicating. I'll get a sound clip soon. I think the resonator is coming out and the mufflers will be replaced for more sound down low.
