I have a high mileage R53 that is on its third thermostat. Since I lift the hood & check things it has not been a problem other than installing another one. The R53 does have a temp gauge that gives me early warning if I don't catch the coolant level going down.
Once again, the lesson that we have to keep learning: check fluids regularly. Check oil level, check coolant, check brake fluid. Look for any drips or leaks on the ground where you park.
We don't have gauges that tell us when we are low, so we need to use our eyes and be diligent.

My understanding is that to avoid owners worrying about small variations in the temp gauge indication, they've turned it into an idiot light - it reads half-scale consistently as long as the temp is below redline, then spikes to full scale when the max value is exceeded.
