I'd view it as personal choice, just like what color of upholtstery you like. Some want a brighter interior, others darker.

What I find amazing is that Mini can charge an additional $250 for a different color headliner which probably costs them nothing more from the suppliers. But then most Mini options are ridiculously overpriced.

How much did it cost you to get the anthracite headliner installed? If you don't mind me asking...

Mine came with the anthracite headliner, and the hot chocolate, piano black& cream interior. It's elegantly dark, and isn't a cleaning problem at all. I'd have asked the same questions in reverse, to the owners of the light headliners. Nothing bad to say about it, but if I ever get a 2nd Cooper, it'll be light inside, and an S under the hood.

No cost to me. BMW MINI completed the Headliner replacement to correct an assembly line build / configuration issue that affected cars build weeks 37 - 44-ish in 2008. These were the first weeks of the MY-2009 build.

I didn't have much of a choice, my dealer located one of the only cars with the options I wanted and it happened to have the Anthracite Headliner. Personally it doesn't bother me much, I probably would rather have the lighter headliner to give a little contrast to the very BLACK interior of my car, not to mention a little more of a interior/exterior match considering I have Dark Silver...

My 2008 Clubman with the Tuscan leather / piano black interior has the stock grey headliner, but I would have preferred the AH to reduce the number of colors in the interior.

I don't mind the light grey, but given the rest of the interior is all tan and black, the darker pillars and roof liner would have been a nice continuation of the color scheme.

I got mine 1 year used, and got a fantastic price, so I'm not complaining
