Speedometer

Okay, what to you really think of that big ole speedo in the middle of the dash? I like the interior, but I'm having reservation 'bout that speedometer. IMO, it just to dang big and looks out of place. I like the MCCS, so I guess I can get use to it....I think.

It's a style issue and not real functional. I just program the speed to also show up beneath the tach. Never look at the speedo, actually.

Ditto.

Big center speedo is one of those styling things that marked the original Mini. Kinda like the bug eye headlights and grill shape.

I have the Nav so that occupies most of the real estate - I *love* the ring speedo. Easy to read, not overwhelming.

R56 is a bit too big. I loved the R53, though. It was signature Mini.

Ditto ditto. I love the big speedo, just like I love the MINI. It wouldn't be a MINI without the big speedo. But I agree, I put the speed on the tach, almost never look at the center one for speed information. When I DO look at it though, it always makes me smile.

Makes me wonder, do our MINIs have the world's largest speedometer? What about the Scion or the classic MINI?

I think it looks cool myself, however the worst thing about it is that the wife can see me speeding and constantly harps at me. I printed-out the thread here on NAM that "documents" the 5-8 mph discrepency between the speedo and actual speed. She ain't buying it.

Buy a handheld GPS and prove it!

I didn't like the giant speedometer either. That helped me spend the extra on the Nav system.

2nd'd

Rarely do I even look at the speedo. I've been driving long enough to tell how fast I'm going and if I'm really concerned about it I'll put on cruise control

I'll have to 2nd(or 3rd or whatever) the not-looking-at-speedometer comment. Knowing which gear and my rpms I'm in are generally the data I check(which IMO are far more important than speed since speed is just a dependent variable in this case)

The gauge SAYS MINI and it's cool. My wife likes going fast (I usually place the Garmin on it so she can only see 100 and above, no complaints so far)...so get a new wife.

The Garmin stuck right on there for 2700 miles a couple on months ago...and you can position it to see all of the speedo and petrol gauge. Plus you can tuck the extra cord into the "umbrella" holder bag and keep it out of the way. Worked great!

Gut the nav system and play DVDs. Maybe satellite TV?

The only thing I'd change is angle it toward the driver's seat by about 10 degrees. It'd make it easier to read.

For it being so big.. i thought it was so the drivers in the lane next to you could see how fast you're going

..or if a cop pulls you over he'll be like how can you not know the speed you were going with that HUGE speedo! teehehehe

There's a speedometer in the middle of the dash? Hmm... I'll have to take a look later.

+1. The 2nd Gen adaptation is overkill and missing it's connectedness with the classic design, other than the center location.

As with most of the earlier posters, I also rely on the digital speedo readout on the tach.

Exactly. My concern wasn't whether I would depend on looking at the speed, or tach, but just the general appearance of the large speedo. Like I said, I'm sure I can get used to it.

I searched all over, but can't find a pic of the NAV system. Anyone care to please post some foto's of the optional NAV. Thanks

I like the speedo proportions in relation to the dash, and I really like how the whole speedo unit is let into the dash....much nicer design-wise than the slumpy first gen dash pad. I use the speedo readouts all...the...time for OBC and radio functions, but not for checking speed necessarily...I have the tach set for that. The ability to display info and to access modes in the speedo display is absolutely brilliant!!

Like said above, I also ignore the speedo. Only the gas guage is important there.
I have the digital speed(with 10% error?) on the tach.
