It's my understanding that with an automatic and the Sports button on, that the car will not shift into sixth gear. I tend to turn on Sport for driving around town and twisty roads, but turn it off if I'm on a long straight away.
I find that the automatic is almost impossible to drive with the sport button on while driving around town. It's too sensitive and you tend to drive in a jerky way. With that being said, I've found that I love driving with the sport button on and the transmission in manual mode. Since the car starts off in 2nd gear while in manual mode, it's not so jerky and you can still manually shift all the way up to 6th gear unlike in automatic mode with the sport button on that only goes to 5th gear. Sometimes I feel like I need a checklist of things to do before I drive off. I insert the key fob, press the brake, press the start button, shift into drive, move the shift **** over to manual mode, press the sport button and finally take off!
one week after picking up my clubman & often forgetting to push the sport button I installed the button mod that automatically turns it on when I start the car. Drives smoother with the sport mode.
I forgot about automatics vs. manuals when I posted. Mine is an automatic, non S, which puts it in last place in the race. So Sport mode keeps the gearing quite a bit lower, and one sees the mpg meter go right down. Steering is tighter. I think it must be more of a change for us automatic folk. Sometimes I'll use the paddle shifter to try to ease it into 6th gear, but back to M5 it goes after a few seconds.
I saw a decal on a car last night that said that. I thought I was losing my mind and my eyes were failing me. So, I said to my wife "does that really say that". She shrugged her shoulders told me to "google it" and if it came up a **** site "Oh Well!". So I did. Damn if there isn't a site for this. With T-Shirts! WOOHOO!!!
