Gas mileage has been terrible – 22 city and 30 highway. For a car this small… by far, this has been the biggest downer.

You do realize that when you say the "S" needs more horse power that mpg shouldn't be used in your vocabulary?

I get 33 around town and 40 on the Highway. Non "S" Standard conservative driving typically.

I must say though ... today I had a brief Malicious Monkey Robot flashback while at a stoplight ...

the best resemblance of the dash someone posted way back when the R56 was released.

If were talking mileage now... I was getting 28 mpg and was pretty happy. My spirited driving was reflective with my results. Then last week I decided to slow down some and with my last tankful I was able to get 33 mpg. I happy with either results. It's just my driving style.

I'm still getting about 24-26 and I don't live in a big city.

Shoot I went on my first trip and I only got 32.5 mpg. I guess over 85 mph it goes back down?

I dunno, wampa, Charlotte traffic pretty much SUCKS! (not as bad as Boston or Atlanta, true, but it still sucks! )

My OBC has been averaging around 32, and I am perfectly happy with that. (yes, I know the OBC is not an exact science and I don't care!)

I didn't buy this car for the mileage...that was just a bonus!

Well I think so too, but according to the NAM city size police, only NYC or LA are to be considered "cities." The rest of us should all be considered highway drivers.

You're getting 32mpg? Gosh, am I doing something wrong or is everyone else a granny?

No granny here! LOL!

I don't have much stop and go traffic. It's a lot of twisty back roads (50-60 MPH) and highway (80 MPH)for me!

See maybe I do live in a city. I do know I don't follow the break-in protocols, although I really don't ever have times where I need to be over 4,500 rpms, I just upshift. I have been over 90 quite a few times, but I gave the pedestrians plenty of time to move, so I didn't use my brakes. Hmm. No idea why my mileage is so bad. I don't even remember to use the sport button so that can't be it either. Maybe A/C?

Wampa,

I've been up to Charlotte a couple of times (my kids live up there). Don't know about the NAM city police but I think Charlotte driving is city driving. It's a lot of stop and go traffic. When we went to Mooresville we were able to drive the back roads and have fun but most of the time I was getting frustrated with the drive.

It's horrible. The roads are pathetic. We need toll roads and we need them now.

Just as a point of comparison..My Justa Automatic is returning 35.4 on OBC AS WELL as manual computation, 99% freeway, 75-80mph average. And he's not even fully broken in yet!

With all this talk of City/Highway MPG, I wonder if it would be more accurate to look at the Average Speed per tank? I tend to think my driving is about 50/50 City/Highway but I really don't know what qualifies as each. I live in the DC area and we have some of the worst traffic in the country, per the media.

Here are my stats on my first six tanks. This if for an 08 Clubman S
(I didn't record all the readings for the first tank from the dealer):

OBC.... Act MPG........ Speed .........Dist ........Gals ........Grade
31.5 .................................................. ....................Premium?
31.1 .......28.3 ............35.2 ..........365 ........12.9 .......Mid Grade
31.7 .......28.8 ............35.2 ..........388........ 13.48 ......Mid Grade
32.3 .......29.99........... 37.2 ..........368........ 12.27 ......Prem (did not reset obc)
32.4 .......29.68 ...........35.2 ..........388 ........13.09 ......Prem (did not reset obc)
32.6 .......29.99 ...........37.6 ..........400.5...... 13.4 .......Prem (did not reset obc)

My comute is fairly consistent. I'm not babying it. (Also, the next to last tank involved an extended ride into downtown DC with pretty heavy traffic)

FWIW, I have noticed that when I ran the two mid-grade tanks, my tail pipes were very clean afterwards. When I run premium, I get a fairly heavy black soot on the ends of the pipes.

For people who are getting 20 or 22 mpg, what are your average speed readings?

(I hope you can read the chart. I cannot get it to appear with the spaces for the columns. Sorry)

Perhaps you might want to copy and paste your post on to this thread: Clubman Real Fuel Consumption https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...highlight=MPGs just so we can keep all the mpgs posts in one place and not derail this one by jweiss who probably sold his Clubman by now.

But seriously, it would be great to keep mpg comments in one place so we can find 'em easily.

For Automatic drivers specifically please post here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...highlight=MPGs

Will do, Otra. Thanks

(I finally figured out to use periods between the numbers to show columns.....that was frustrating!)

This is ignoring the fact that the MINI is nothing close to being an economy automobile. It's a sportscar, even the justacoopers are sportscars.

I think that it's amazing that we are even able to hit over 25mpg with these cars. Personally I'm hitting about 30mpg in my justaclubman.

I don't think Coopers are Sports Cars ... sporty, yes.

If a Cooper is a sports car, what is a Corvette?

Anyway, this issue has been debated ad nauseum in the General Mini Fourm.

BTW, I think we should sticky this thread

Economy in fuel consumption, certainly not in quality. Indeed very few non-hybrid 'Economy' cars can match or beat Mini.

Not all sportscars are cut of the same cloth. The Corvette is nice, for certain types of driving, the MINI is nice for different kinds of driving. Both race differently, especially depending upon the year of the Corvette.

I would call the MINI a sportscar. I mean its not a Camry. Is it more Camry or more Porsche Cayman?

I would argue that the MINI is way closer to a Cayman than a Camry, IMHO.

Lurch, great monkey.
I can actually see it on the Speedo!

Now, if I could only see the sailboat on 3-D pictures.

MPG? The OBC is crap. Mine is always a few MPG high.
Boys and girls, you should always do the MPG math in your head. It stops your senility from advancing too early.
