26mpg first tank - 75% city.

Looking forward to the engine freeing up a bit.

... with less than 800 miles on new justa-Clubman using Mobil 93 octane

My calculations:
Drove 352.7 miles (all city & bumper-to-bumper highway)
The tank took 12.46 gallons which = 28.30 MPG

Assuming it'll improve after the 1250 mi break-in period

I took a 200 mile road trip this weekend (mostly interstate highway -- 400 miles roundtrip). Fully loaded S Clubman; wife and two teenaged daughters with me. With just under 4,000 on the clock as we started out, we hit the road early on Saturday. I used the cruise control at or near 70 MPH throughout and averaged 37.4 out and 38.1 back by the OBC.

Your results may vary, but not bad, not bad at all....

Considering that was city and bumper to bumper traffic, that is pretty darn good!

MPG

Mixed driving interstate and town I am averaging 31.6 in my Clubman S. The best I have gotten shifting at 28K, coasting and killing the engine at red lights is 35.9.

A friend with an 08 Cooper is getting 39 MPG mixed but he says he wishes he had gotten the turbo.

All depends on what is more important to you, fuel economy or the extra performance.

Around Tucson we were getting about 32-33 MPG. Here in Seattle we get 30-31 mpg. We have to climb 500 feet from shopping back to where we are staying. "Brisk" is an understatement for the way I drive.

If mileage is a big deal, buy a Prius.

As it seems only one or two have commented on the gas used. here goes.

6500 miles, mpg calculations below are hand calculated from the mileage and gallons.

half with 91 or 93 octane (Shell or Mobil) mixed driving - 34-35 mpg

half with 87 octane (Shell or Mobil) mixed driving - 34-35 mpg

BTW the one tank that i did drive on something other than Shell or Mobil. I think it was LUK Oil station, i got very bad gas mileage, down around 28 mpg.

So from my experience only it does not seem to matter the octane but it does matter that it is a Top Tier Gas, i.e. Shell, Mobil, Gulf, Chevron etc.

Schatyz this brings up a good point. As we all know Mini recommends premium fuel for the S models. Is that really the case? Will 87 octane cause damage to the engine in the long run? I plan on having this car for 10 years, so I'm torn between running premium and regular fuel.

I run my BMW on 87 and have been doing so for more than 65,000 miles with no extra strain on the engine. BTW this cars owners manual does not recommend 93 octane it REQUIRES it. I have talked to the dealer and other high end mechanics and they all have told me to run what makes sense. If you can run 87 octane and the engine does not ping then the ping sensors are working, and the best way to know if the ping sensors are working is if there will be a lack of power, not a great lack but you would be able to tell the difference between the acceleration on 87 and 91 octane. Then they would recommend going to one grade higher. I find no loss of power or fuel economy using the 87 octane in my BMW.

I actually find my Clubman runs smoother and starts easier on the 87 octane than on the 93.

The driving profile makes a huge difference...

City stop and go hammers the snot our of the mileage. The only reason we are at a almost 30 combined are the two 1000 mile + road trips.

10,000 miles in. I'm averaging 37.5 (calculated not OBC). Driving is split 80 highway/20 city.

My last tank was the worst. It was all drivig around town. I got 29.8.

Here is the record so far on our Clubman S auto. City driving is tough because of many hills and stop signs every other block. (San Francisco)
The Clubman is doing better than our 06 Mini S auto did.
Note that the car computer is always a mile or two better in estimating the mpg. than the actual calculation.

S Clubman auto, PURE city/dense suburban driving--no trips farther than 5-6 miles, never getting above 50mph, spending most of the time either accelerating away from a light or slowing down, hilly area, winter in VA: 22mpg. Still in the break-in period.

I have had my Clubman since the end of September. I have 3800 miles on it and have put in 11 tanks of gas. Daily commute is 16 miles of go fast, crawl, go fast, crawl. Not fun!

Best mileage: 32.3

Worst mileage: 28.4

Average of: 31

And I love to drive the mountain twisties! I don't drive the car easy and there is not really a flat spot around Central Pa.

We haven't gone on a long trip with it yet. We will go to Pittsburgh next week and Disney in the spring. I am very curious to see what we get then!

Cooper Clubman S, 33mpg highway, using cruise control at 75mph, hand calculated, 26-27mpg, briskly driven, city. Over 17K miles in just under a year, so it's definitely broken in

I seem to be at the very low end of gas mileage here. I am assuming that all factors--auto trans, "S", traffic/suburban/hills, cold weather--are conspiring against me. I guess I need a longer commute! And to send my daughter to a private school across town. Hey, anything for the environment!

My MCCS with 2500 miles and 85-90% city/local driving averages about 26-27. Driven hard on local back roads.

From the above, it seems that the S versions are getting about 28 average and the justacooper versions are getting around 32. Wonder if it's the difference between the engines or the types of personalities that buy the different models.

Standard automatic at about 3,000 miles. Best tank mileage 40.7, worst was 23.8 (this lowest number was short outings, with constant stop and go). Long interstate drives at 70-75MPH seem to be consistently at 37.5, on flat roads.

I mix premium gas (which is 91 octane in California) with mid-grade 50-50, so the tank averages 90 octane.
