I'm averaging about 35 on the dashboard display, but around 33 when I do the calculation after filling up. That's mixed driving, mostly local, base Clubman, manual. Based on other posts about MPG, it appears that the on-board computer is over by about 5% versus actual fill-up MPG calculation, which is not a big deal. I have around 1,200 miles, and each tank seems to be getting slightly better mileage than the previous tank, although I've only filled-up three times in two months. The 400+ mile range to empty is also a great MINI feature.

I did some highway trips recently in my '07 manual Cooper...OBC read well over 45 mpg. City driving for me is still around 41 mpg (OBC). Factoring in any theoretical OBC errors, I feel safe in saying that, when driving for economy, manual Coopers are easily 38 mpg city/44mpg highway cars in real life. That makes them a very strong runner among the higher mpg cars, though I don't think folks have figured this out yet as the EPA sticker (rightly) reads somewhat lower.....and most of the press who write on such things tend to not explore mpg performance in real life.

Gokartride - that is exactly what I keep wanting to hear. I've always gotten better than EPA on manual cars (I coast a lot, but not like hypermilers down to super slow speeds). The MINI billboard last year said 40 mpg before new EPA rules, so I knew i had to be possible. I'm still in pre-buy mode of research and playing with the configurator a million times, but the MINI is out unless what you are saying is true. The OBC is a huge help factor in driving for economy, because you can see when you are driving to hard, and of course if you are in the mood to burn a little cash for fun then the MINI will accommodate unlike a high mpg hybrid.

Your right about the press too, because they are not driving for economy, they are driving to stomp on a car they have for a day or week.

The fact you are getting that mpg lets me know I can too. Too bad you can get tax writeoffs for buying a hybrid with barely better or even worse mpg, but not the MINI.

We often forget that a long list of cars in the early and mid 80s got 40+ mpg. My 1985 Jetta did. The CRX got 50 mpg. Then again they didn't have airbags, electric windows, maybe even power steering, and ran on light 13" rims.

Yes, lots of folks on NAM are getting these results on manual R56 Coopers. Even though these are #s for a coupe, I would hope the Clubman would do similarly.

I consistently average 31 mpg with my 07S. I enjoy accelerating like a fool! I have been able to average 36 mpg at 72 mph on long trips, all figures are calculated because OBC is rediculously optimistic. approaching 15k miles and my first oil change now.

A recent trip from West Virginia to Buffalo, I averaged 45 mpg at interstate speed. Around WV, I average 34-36mpg mostly due to hills.

The question is:
Why is the high MPG not known by the masses?
Inquiring mind still wants to know.
My BMW convertible averaged about 25 and MPG was a 'major' factor on picking a ClubmanS.
This +$4 gas will get the Mini dealers to start going ADMarkup soon enough.

2007 Mini Cooper Non S

Hi I have a 2007 Mini Non S Manual BRG with sports package (16" Goodyear run flats) We have 1667 miles and have driven it easy a little coasting keeping the RPM's down and currently the OBC indicates 38.4 since new. Last few fill ups calculated 39.6 and 40.3 running 93 octane. Best mileage seems to be on country back roads about 40-45MPH in 5th gear. Not a fan of the run flats, however love the idea of the spare and the run flats- best of both.

I do mostly city driving in my S... avg about 26.1 :/ even when on hwy I avg about 33ish or so. I wish I could say it was higher. I've only put 2 tanks of gas in it so far (93 and 91 respectively) so I hope it goes up a bit with a few more miles on it

The masses seemingly only go by what they're told, and the official EPA #s are probably the only figures that MINI (and hence automotive reviewers) and the sales staff are allowed to promote. Seems right to me...the EPA numbers represent a standard measurement for consumer comparison. Driving technique is such a big factor, too....and most of the higher #s are being generated by owners purposely exploring what a manual Cooper will do. Frankly though, it isn't that hard to exceed the EPA numbers by a wide margin. I don't know what is up with that, but I sure like it!!!!

I have been getting between 38 and 41 mpg, calculated. My daily commute is 60 miles round trip and perfect for high mileage. All back roads - 50 mph - some rolling hills. Very few stops.

The EPA changed the way the numbers are calculated at of September of 2007. So a MINI made before September would have been rated 40 Highway. Under the new calculation, it's 37. In my opinion, it's nicer to be pleasantly surprised that you've beaten the EPA spec than to be sadly disappointed that you can't even meet it.

The secret slowly seems to be coming out. I've got people asking me every day what I get for mileage, and every time I go to my.yahoo.com, there's another "Top 10" article of green cars or good commuter cars with the MINI nestled somewhere in the middle.

I think that the masses DO know. My neighbour (who traded his full-size tundra last yr for a Hyundai Santa Fe) has asked me about the mini and what kind of mileage it gets. He's only averaging 19mpg in his Santa Fe in about 50/50 city/highway driving.

Also - take a look at aol/msn/edmunds/etc etc and you'll always see the justacooper mentioned as a fuel miser. On top of that take the empirical evidence of the mini's recent good sales figures and I think you'll see that word is O-U-T

Gas Mileage 2007 Cooper Manual Transmission Non S

For what it is worth, if you search wikipedia for "hyper mileage" there is a lot of information, some good every day helpful stuff for improving mileage, some overly obsessive techniques.

Latest fill-up of my Clubman base, manual was 34.5 MPG calculated, on-board computer showed 36.0 MPG. Mixed local / highway, more sprints to redline now that the break-in is over, and I'm using the "Sport" setting more often.

Have been trying to be easy on this tank of gas due to this thread. Down to three petals on the gas gauge and the computer shows 44.4mpg after a 200mile interstate trip, 65mph with a/c.

... with less than 800 miles on new justa-Clubman using Mobil 93 octane

My calculations:
Drove 352.7 miles (all city & bumper-to-bumper highway)
The tank took 12.46 gallons which = 28.30 MPG

Assuming it'll improve after the 1250 mi break-in period

I havd just under 2000 miles with Non-S and 16" all seasons. I'maveraging 36 for mixed driving. Taking a 1000 trip starting tomorrow, so I'm looking to see some improvement with an all highway tank full.

My computer consistently say im getting 5mpg over reality, always compute mileage at fill up for anything to be near accurate. I also found that while trying to Reset my computer after my first oil change at 15,500 miles my computer mileage calculation is whithin one mile of actual. I still show an over optimistic 450 -500 mile range with a full tank though at 31 mpg my range is more like 420 miles. cruising at 72 or below i average 36 mpg.

My best tank yet!

42.7 MPG on my last tank, calculated by me on a calculator, not by the computer in the car.
