Antenna base issue causing bad reception 05 cabrio

Reception has always been a bit spotty; seemed to get interference from proximity to other cars, especially when stopped at a light. Got a stubby replacement antenna from Helix; no discernable improvement. Noticed that when I hold the antenna reception improves, so I suspected a ground issue. Further experimentation shows that there's a tiny bit of play where the antenna screws into the base, with a click or pop you can feel. Of course the "resting" position is the one that's no good. Unless this is an easy DIY, I can't decide whether to take this to a car stereo place or to a dealer. I have a short commute and love public radio. Help and thanks!

Check the antenna base and connections. If still an issue it might need replaced. You will have to unhook the rearview mirror and hat panel to get access to the base threaded connection.

I have not taken a look at my lower (inner) part of the antenna, I do know with the R53 there is a Module directly under the antenna base, more than likely there is one under the the R52 antenna mount as well.

To troubleshot your issues I would more than likely, drop the forward headline to gain access to the antenna base, this will allow you to tighten the "Fixing Nut" and this will allow you to check the antenna connectors there as well in and out of the module.

I don't think the work would be difficult just a bit fidgety, having to remove the sun visors and the rear view mirror and so on... I would estimate about 10 minutes to get everything out of the way, then pop out the windshield frame cover gaining access to the antenna base ... about 5 minutes to check everything then putting it all back together, say a total of 30 minutes (taking in the account of dropping a screw or two, having to walk back and forth to the tool box for the correct tool...).

Best of luck.

Motor on!
