Transmission issue / shame on me!!

Purchased a 2007 Mini convertible with auto transmission from a local car dealer (non mini dealer), then moved to small towns miles and miles from a mini dealer. The car originally came from the Phoenix area and appeared to have been well taken care of and drove great. After a couple months I noticed some oil drops on the garage floor, so took "Smiley" to a local repair shop to see if they could see the problem. Of course they do not see any Mini Coopers other than the ones I have taken to them, and they found the transmission leaking where the two halves come together. To top that off they said it looks like it has been wrecked as someone tried to repair the transmission case with JB Weld and that is where the oil is dripping from. I took "Smiley" to a transmission shop today and they do not think the car has been wrecked as there is no other signs of damage under the car. They think previous owner may have hit a curb or something that pushed the transmission up and hit the frame cross mount cracking one side of the case.

My question to you is I feel I need to check the fluid level until I can get the transmission torn down and fixed. From what I have found there is a plug I need to remove to check that the fluid is at the bottom of that plug. Does anyone know for sure where that plug is? If it is low, what type of fluid do I need to put in to make sure I keep the level up so as not to ruin the inners?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
