R52 "service engine soon" light is on but not problems!!

I'd like to know if others have had this problem.

I have a 2006 S Convertible with 92k miles and my "service engine soon" light is on. I took it to the dealership twice and the code is "P2096" unknown. The car runs fine. Any thoughts?

I had the service engine soon light come on without any issues with the car. The cause was due to running the car with almost no gas and also filling up with the engine running (I think this creates low pressure at the injectors... or something to the effect). The engine light cleared after driving the car 30 to 40 miles. However this may not be the reason for your engine light. Good luck!

The Service Engine Soon light means "The exhaust emissions have deteriorated" (from the Owners Manual). A possible cause of P2096 is a bad O2 (oxygen) sensor. It's what happened with my 2006 R52 at about 60K miles. The O2 sensor is covered by warranty to 100K miles and the dealer replaced it for free.

You are asking your MINI to do something it isn't supposed to do which will cost you some serious money down the road replacing the fuel pump. It operates on a high pressure fuel system. Running the engine while refueling does two things; with the tank cap removed, it causes the pump to die sooner than necessary and it endangers you and every one around you as a fire hazzard. The sign that says not to pump gas with the engine running is there for a reason.
