I know many of us have heard the "girly car" comment about our MINIs, but this is the first time I've heard a comment like this.

I was filling up at the local gas station. An older guy (late 50s, early 60s) was filling his Yukon next to me.

Him: "That's a nice car...what kind of mileage are you getting?"
Me: "It's a blast to drive. This model is supercharged, and I get 25-30 depending on how I drive it."
Him: "Looks like it has plenty of room for such a small car. I've always liked those. I'm going to have to go look at them."
Me: "Once you drive one, you'll have to have it."
Him: "And the best part is, it's such a macho car. It just looks like a man should be driving it fast." (No sarcasm or subterfuge detected)

And then he got in his Yukon and drove off.

Although no one has ever told me that I drive a "girly car," I have to say, that's the first time I've heard someone say it's a macho car.

I get kinda tired of everyone asking about the mileage. The mileage on the MCS is nothing great, and at times it's downright poor.

 

Sounds about right:

cojones the size of grapefruits = MCS pilot.

it seems everytime at the gas station filling up, someones got to ask the MPG. lol, just the other day i got a comment "i'd rather be driving one of them right now than anything else on the road [b/c of mpg]" lol

Anyone who knows anything about cars knows the mini is not a girly car. I've gotten that so much! But a white knuckled test ride always changes their minds!

I have never ever bought a car based on mileage. I get asked that question too. I usually tell them I've got no idea, but I'm sure it would be better If I drove the speed limit. I've also got no idea what the horsepower of my MCS is, couldn't care less, I get asked that question too. I just no it's quick, looks good, and is fun to drive!

 

A Friend of mine was in Tallahassee, Fl. and said the Gay community were into Mini's in a big way.He asked me if I knew it BEFORE I purchased my MCS.! I always thought they were waving and blowing the horn because I was driving a Mini! Bill

 

Well, if he was in his late 50's/early 60's, he may have been raised with a different mindset, in the time of Austin-Healey, Triumph, and MGB, when society didn't generally view small convertibles as inherently "effeminate".

 

Your friend sounds as though that thy have a problem. I have had so many women want to talk to me because of my Cabrio MINI, and guys think it's great. Sometimes it stinks being married.....

It's kinda funny that there are guys out there that base their masculinity on what they drive. I can't imagine being that insecure. It seems that when we "gays" move into a part of town it's the beginning of something good. Has anyone heard of Midtown Atlanta? So perhaps, if gays are flocking to a particular car it says a lot about the quality of that car? If nothing else, it says something about the styling of that car. If your masculinity can handle driving a MINI (or any other car for that matter) perhaps it's best you get an over-compensation mobile (Hummer, etc) and a cigarette boat to pull behind it.

 

I know I am glad that gays move into some rundown areas , it makes the neighborhoods improve enough that you get a great deal on a great home and then sell it for a fortune. Too bad the same can't be said for the car..... dangit.


Actually, I ended up with my Mini because my wife wanted to buy a pink NB Cabrio...... So yes, to some degree I base my masculinity on a car , I just couldn't handle having to occasionally drive a pink car.

i just get "thats gay looking" but of course all the guys i work with drive big trucks and think only " real men drive trucks" . i keep asking one to got for a ride but they just give me "ohh i wouldnt feel safe its to small"

but as far as the gas station questions i get " is that thing safe " more then anything

 

Our other car is a VW Cabrio. The original B**ch Basket.

 

The "macho" comment was quickly negated by the female (with a gun) guard at the base gate who said "Awwww, it's so little, cute." Since she was armed, I simple smiled and slowly drove away.

 

All the guys who express an interest in my car's gas mileage seem to be driving a big chunk of steel, and are too insecure to GET a mini, but they drool when you tell them how it handles. I was accustomed to having unpopular opinions at a young age, but it seems that there are plenty of guys who ask about the car but are "afraid" their truck-driving friends will laugh at them.

 

Wonder what it says about the MINI owners that dwell in the sticks...or maybe I don't want to know.

 

I had a pickemup look mine over at the gas station. he walked back and asked about it, very interested. talked about the setup and he was more than impressed....said he was going to go look at them after seeing mine. even teh station attendant came over and was checking it out. If I was stock, I'd doubt I'd get the same reaction, but the loud pipes and Recaro's sure do turn heads.

 

When reflecting on this thread, my husband was commenting that when he drives our MINI, he wants a t-shirt that says...

Undercompensating .... it's a good thing!

Or some twist on the same theme. It would play into the macho car theme...

Especially where we live (Southern Illinois), since everyone seems to think they need a HUGE truck or SUV.
