>>Im sorry (and no disrespect to your boyfriend) but the Focus is really ugly. There is nothing visually appealing about that car.<<

Compare it to its peer group: Escort, Cavalier, Neon, Sunfire, etc. Still think there's nothing visually appealing about it? I don't find the Focus desirable, but I do think that it's pretty amazingly attractive for an American carmaker's base model! At least it has some semblance of cohesive design. Plus it has capable handling, whereas a lot of cars in that price range handle like trucks.

>>In fact at the MINI training meeting, the video they showed went out of its way to make fun of the Focus and the Beetle. They said in the video "If you drive a focus, well maybe it says..you couldnt afford anything but a focus" everyone in the room started clapping. lol.<<

Wow, you guys are really cool.

>> Just what's with the MINI ad campaigns and apparently training material
>>making fun of all the other cars and SUVs out there? It just seems.. jerky, somehow.

Every industry I've been involved with makes fun of their competitors in some shape, form or fashion. It all comes down to how much Kool-Aid you drink as to whether you believe your own company's hype.

I the marketing model of sell! sell! sell!, you have to do either make yourself look really good (and have the facts to back it up), or make the other guy look really bad. (Guess which one is easier!) Most are in the middle - not the best, but not as bad as that guy or that guy.

Cheers,
Bill

>>Seriously...there is no need to bash Fords. My fiance drives a new Focus ZTS and it's actually a really nice car. I had never been in one before his and I really like it. It's not my personal cup of tea, but then again the MINI isn't everyone's personal cup of tea either.

I agree with laying off of the Fords. But not bashing the Focus? Puh-leeze! That's like trying to tell your puppy to stop chasing the kids around the backyard!!!

And another cool pic. I say we need to get a MINI specced out for the WRC...unfortunately it's a wee bit short in it's current state...

lbboarderh2o, that does indeed sound sad. Accidents are terrible things...particularly when they happen to the innocent.

OK...but not everyone is YOU. Just because you don't find something attractive doesn't mean that there isn't alot of other people out there that do.

In fact at the MINI training meeting, the video they showed went out of its way to make fun of the Focus and the Beetle. They said in the video "If you drive a focus, well maybe it says..you couldnt afford anything but a focus" everyone in the room started clapping. lol.
Wow...that's pretty pathetic. And last I checked, MINIs weren't all that expensive either. With a base price of $16,995 for a Cooper? Since when are we so elitest? It's not like we all drive $50,000 cars here. I agree with jwhcars...bashing other people's products is VERY poor selling and shame on MINI for doing that. I didn't think that their marketing department would stoop to a level like that, but sadly I guess I was mistaken.

I agree with laying off of the Fords. But not bashing the Focus? Puh-leeze! That's like trying to tell your puppy to stop chasing the kids around the backyard!!!
As far as this is concerned...honestly....what is so bad about the Focus? Noone has given any good reasons as to why we should make fun of it.

And lbboarderh20...I am sorry to hear about the girl at your school. I hope everything works out.

I agree with what you say to a point, L: making fun of Rustangs is still allowed.

^ ^ Note that I said what is so bad about the FOCUS. Never once did I say that I liked Mustangs. Although I have seen some Cobras that are pretty nice.

i believe i was the one who brought up rustangs and slowmaros....

the cobra, though, is a whole 'nother class of car..... i mean, that thing actually has a working powerhouse in it....

when i was looking to buy a focus, i noticed it had a few recalls on it... something about the engine starting on fire a la ford pinto (NHTSA recall # 02V288000 for those who need their work citied...), that's what turned me away from that car... NHTSA shows about 15 recalls on it....

.... thats why we need to get ray guns to zap the bad SUV drivers. Not ALL are bad, but 90% are. One hit one of my club members on our last meet, and blamed US for the crash. Dumb punk in a blazer.

Yeah when the Focus was released here there were alot of recalls. They spanned for awhile. They got them all worked out. Unfortunately some of the Focus recalls were particularly nasty.

Just like the MINI though, all new cars have recalls until all the bugs get worked out.

I'd never bash a guy drivig a pick up.. theres a reason you bought that pick up... and i've never bash a soccer mom in a mini-van theres a utitly to that mini-van. However,, i've nver see so many morons onthe road by-them-selves in navigators talking on phones.. sittign in traffic.. there teh reason my gas costs an arm and a leg.... I've seen what happen when daddys give their 18 yr-old daughters suvs and they drive them off cliffs.. (seriously i've seen it more than once) You coudl be the best driver in teh world andget ina big honking navigator and still kill someone else or yourself... I can say this.. for every mini on the road there one less person driving an SUV, or land yacht. IF your knowledgable about SUVs then only reason .. and I do mean the only reason to own one is because you look good in it... or becuase you have to haul band equipment ( or some other load on a daily basis) otherwise, i've alwasy been able to widdle down any argument to own own an suv... seriously folks.. the world would be a better place without them.

The main problem with SUVs is that many of the drivers don't drive them more carefully because of their size, they drive them crazier because of their own feeling of safety. SUVs are heavy vehicles which require more time to turn and stop, but many drivers don't allow for the extra space required. Their sense of well-being, because they are in a big vehicle, is causing a lot of grief to the smaller cars they hit. And don't even get me started on the gas mileage.

Sure, a few people need big vehicles. But the majority of SUV owners will never go off-road or use it to haul things.

Be rational, buy only the size vehicle you need. I have my regular cab Tacoma pickup to haul the occasional item home from the store, and my MINI Cooper to drive to work in a fun and fuel-efficient way.
