Right because the issue has been resolved on newer cars, with the new parts during build. At least in the eyes of MINI.

The '03, on which I originally experienced this problem, has been traded for an '05. The '05 exhibits the same type of noise as the '03 did before transmission replacement, but not nearly as loud.

On the '03 it really sounded like a top-end/dead lifter type of noise, but the only time I could hear it was with the clutch released in neutral.

On the '05, I hear the same noise, but I really have to listen for it. I haven't bothered to complain. It may be that a slight noise from the throw out bearing is normal.

When they replaced the transmission on my '03, I think it may have been because the noise was beyond normal.

I've had mine for a couple years and it's always done it now and then. I've done nothing to really fix it and currently have about 84k on the tach. No other problems so far with my trans. or clutch.

cmyk - I've have the same 06 astro black cs and I have the noise as well. My clutch sometimes feels tight as well. But not every time I engage it...its weird. Does anybody else have this problem as well

Just got mine and same thing. Searched and found no reasonable conclusion on a fix. Kinda dissheartening after spending 28K. Anybody out there with a fix?

You guys have nothing to worry about... it's normal. If you want to make it louder, throw in a lightened flywheel. :impatient Like someone had posted previously, let the clutch out slowly, and the noise gets softer. It's a normal sound. My VW Jetta (5 sp.) had the same noise before I put the lightened flywheel on. After the flywheel, it got extremely loud (a constant chatter, chatter, chatter.) I kept taking it back in to the dealer to get the problem fixed. After having the throwout bearing replaced (even though the clutch kit came with a new one), constant inspections, and major money dumped down the drain, we came to the conclusion along with researching that this was normal. Good luck, but don't let the sound bother you and ruin the fun of having one of the most fun cars on the road.

Yeah i was told by my mini service rep that the Getrag gearboxes ('04 and up i think) are 'noisy' gearboxes than the typical toyota or honda gearboxes. Infact he mentioned that the first mini's ('01-'03?) gearboxes are even noisier by comparison.

The guy in the first post said that his only makes the noise when the clutch is out in neutral. This is a common problem with Miatas, maybe they are similar? Do the Mini's use a hydraulic clutch or a cable driven clutch?

The problem on the Miata was that the shaft that pushed against the clutch fork needed to have grease on the end of it. It was a really easy thing to fix.

This is my first post! (we don't even own a Mini.......yet!)
