You must drive on a lot of long flat roads.

In L.A., this is difficult to do.

I'm getting right around 30 MPG (I'd say 75/25 mix of hwy/city) with my '06 MC w/CVT. It comes out to almost exactly 400 miles per tank.

but anyway ... I use SD and Manual mode a lot on my CVT, now that I am used to them and still average about 25 ... or 300-320 a tank.
you could get CVT 'S's starting in 04 or 05

Exactly my questions. I'd like to know if you've got a lot of hills or stoplights on your route, making you have to shift often. That always blows my gas mileage and my 02 is terrific on mpg. often getting 30 or above on the interstate.

No, you can't.

You can get automatics, but the 'S' has an Aisin manufactured AW TF-61SN transmission, which is a 'normal' 6-speed automatic, while the base automatic Cooper has a ZF manufactured ecoTronic VT1F CVT.

The two automatic transmission technologies are about as different as a manual transmission and the Aisin.

As an experiment once, I actually drove about 60 MPH on a highway, and didn't rev the engine at all to see what kind of gas millage I could get with my CVT. It went up to about 36 MPH!
