R50/53 Tachometer_Lighting
Tachometer_Lighting
We have a new MCS with 348 miles on it now, so it hasn't been revved yet past 4,000rpm. I noticed that on the tachometer, there are additional increments beginning at 5,500rpm, the first four (from 5,500-6,500) of which are not backlit when the lights are on. Do these light up at all as the tach approaches 6,000rpm?
The "lighted" redline part of the tachometer begins just after 6,500rpm. I've seen pictures that make this appear to be "normal", but is it?
Thanks,
Greg

Your tach is fine. The same tach is used in the MINI One, the MINI One Diesel, the MINI Cooper, and the MINI Cooper S. Depending on which car you have, the redline is different. They share the same physical tachometer, but the ECU indicates the redline in the appropriate place. The One Diesel has the lowest redline, and the Cooper S the highest.

I heard there was talk of Mini using the "moving redline" like BMW does. On my M3 the tach lights stay lit until the car is warmed up. They go all the way down to 4k (yellow) and they will turn off as the water temp reaches normal operating tempurature just leaving 1 yellow near 7,500 and red after 8k.
Nice feature, but when the water is warm the car is not warmed up - it's the oil temp they should have linked to.
