R50/53 Legit Service Issues?
Legit Service Issues?
I bought a new-used Mini that is still under the factory warranty.
There are 2 issues I'd like addressed:
I'm experiencing a "bucking" when I'm traveling below 10 mph (forward or reverse). In searching the forum I understand that a software upgrade may fix this.
My other concern is that there is some type of dirt/debri behind the glass of the center mount speedometer.
Do you think Mini will fix these items or will it be a battle?
(BTW ... '06 MC, auto trans, with 5400 miles)

I had no problem getting those types of things taken care of when I bought my MINI. The dealership took care of a stumble that required a software upgrade, and a "cosmetic" problem (leaking taillight) at my request. They also replaced one of the dashboard panels because of a fit or finish problem -- I've forgotten which it was -- that I hadn't even noticed.
Unless the previous owner did a "mod" of the car (Doubtful on a CVT) then I see no problem you getting warranty service for the remainder of the time. Warranty is warranty and all 83 or so MINI dealers in the US are under obligation to honor your factory warranty.
As an owner of a 4 year old MC CVT, the first "problem" you describe is not really a problem. I would advise against getting any engine software updates unless the car is stalling in the midst of traffic or jerking like a rodeo horse. I would not mess with that. Take it from someone who has travelled down the road of software updates in a Cooper CVT.
My '02 MC CVT drives incredibly well today after 39K miles and the last software update was applied alittle over 3 years ago. No issues since. Your car is a 2006, so it should have the latest software from the factory, and probably a much newer version of it of what it is installed in my car.
The "10 MPH" effect in the CVT will certainly lessen as miles pile up. After 10K miles the car should smooth out substantially and by the time you hit 25K you'll be cruising with turbine smooth acceleration.
If you take it back to the dealer, all they are going to do is to clear the "Mototronic" CVT settings. Your CVT transmission "learns" your driving habits and therefore adjusts performance accordingly. This is a very complex process and way back in the beginning, was the cause of many headaches for us early MINI CVT adopters.
Perhaps the previous owner of the car drove in a way (who knows exactly how) and the CVT learned his specific driving habits. Rather than messing around with the controlling software, I would take it back to the dealer and have them clear the transmission learned adaptations back to completely CLEAN, that way the car will re-learn your driving habits and not impose on you the adaptations it learned from the previous owner.
The CVT is a very complex car and you will be doing yourself a big favor by becoming very acquinted with it, in terms of how the CVT works, what driving skills you need to develop in order to get the maximum return from the CVT etc.

Our MINI with CVT will be delivered the first of November. When I drove a "Demo", they said that the CVT will buck a bit at very low speed and it did. Not too bad, but noticeable. My thoughts are that the computer (on the Demo) has one rought time trying to learn. Thus it will naturally act up some.
Still I have been somewhat concern, thinking that "we will learn each other desires" and have a smooth transition.
Very nice to read that after 10,000 or so that it will only get smoother.
[ scheduled for production this coming week]
